Art is a reaction to a moment in context. Exploring this theme, Keren Toledano's abstract work creates dialogue between elements in tension. Dark and light, transparent and opaque, smooth surfaces disrupted by scribbles, all invoke the layered history of the canvas. The compositions have a sense of order, while entropy peers through from beneath. The artist studied literature at Harvard, where she first explored the overlap of story and art. She lives and works in New York City, splitting her time between painting and writing. She works by the motto that we are nowhere without where we have been.

Leslie Nix uses painting to explore ideas of memory and how past experiences and feelings make their way into the present. Compelling studies of light, color, and form, her "Memoryscapes" are rendered in a soft, muted palette of oils, sometimes layered with wax to embody the passage of time. She is based in Los Angeles. Nix received her BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design.

Painting on a large-scale Trica French seeks to offer an encounter that feels encompassing. For over a decade she has held a painting practice holding conversations on canvas about sensuality, love, exhalation, silence, duality, stillness and the soothing qualities of the natural world.

The smooth paleness of white porcelain is dramatically illuminated against a dark background in Sarah Bird's Fountain. Exploring the intimate poetry of the still life genre, the artist has arranged the vessels as though liquid could flow from one into the next, the blue tinge of the smallest bowl suggesting water without its presence. Masterfully rendered in oil using 19th-century techniques, Bird's paintings recall classic European works while also evoking a spare, modern feel that offers space for contemplation.

I paint intuitively in washes of watered down acrylic and watercolor and then build textural moments with acrylic mediums with brushes, fingers or dripping techniques-whatever feels appropriate moment to moment. During the process of making I strive to loose myself and experiment with the materials' innate tension-striving for the juicy oil and vinegar moments where water and suspended pigment take on an unpredictable form of their own. The "Messenger" series speaks to the artistic process of receiving partial and fleeting messages from the subconscious-as if the painting itself were a homing pigeon, a surface carrying secrets, sealed with vermillion wax. The irony, of course, is that the secrets are garbled, swirling, and illegible, as if melted in transit, flying too close to the sun or encountering a rainstorm.

The reductive prints give the illusion of texture while maintaining the integrity of the original work of art. In other words - they are the flat version of an original. The key to our reductive print starts with the scan. The scanner captures all of the detail from the original. Every mark, brushstroke, fine line, smudge and incidental as well as the peaks and valleys of the piece are captured and reproduced to simulate the depth of the original when printed.

Drawn as a study based on the work of Jan Kobell Vaassen this etching on paper by Reinierus Albertus Ludovicus baron van Isendoorn à Blois was acquired by The Rijksmuseum in 1880. Studies created from the works of great masters were vital to an artist's practice and education. Studies are often overlooked but just as impactful and interesting as works of art themselves.
