Via Rijks: Although the painting is dated 1872, the painting may have been made earlier: Courbet spent six months in prison in 1871 and made many still lifes of apples during that time (de Leeuw 2000). In 1872 Courbet sent this painting to the Salon, but was rejected (Vergeest).
