This clock took my breath away when I opened the box...unlike so many things these days it's made of solid wood (I haven't wound it yet...as it's a Christmas gift to myself...have to wait). The craftsmanship is old-world and the heft bespeaks its quality. What a great price to boot. Cute, but no instructions as to how you are supposed to stick your hand way inside to insert the battery. You can't see the battery compartment really, so no idea which end is which with respect to the battery. I ended up pretty much "removing" the clock to see what I was doing. I managed to get the clock back in its position place, but it was difficult; trial and error. Not a user-friendly design feature. Also, the clock face itself is at a considerable slow to conform to the slope of the kettle, I guess. In my opinion, the clock could have jutted out more and closer to a 90-degree angle, this improving viewing of the clock face. My husband and I are extremely pleased with the Hermle Austen Clock (we chose the Cherry finished case, with the quartz movement). We researched for some time before deciding on this chiming, mantle clock by Hermle. First, the quality is excellent, with a German-made movement and an American-made case. Also, the Cherry finish is perfectly even, and the brass dial and handle are lovely, subtle tones. Just as important, the chimes sound wonderful -- almost as though we were in London and hearing Big Ben from a distance (there are 3 options for the sound of the chimes, we use Westminster). I'm really happy with the clock. The reason I gave it 4 stars, rather than 5 is because when I placed it on my shelf I saw it wasn't level. When I turned it upside down, I noticed that the protective strips covered the whole leg on one side & only partially covered the other leg, leaving it wobbly.
