This clock took my breath away when I opened the box...unlike so many things these days it's made of solid wood (I haven't wound it yet...as it's a Christmas gift to myself...have to wait). The craftsmanship is old-world and the heft bespeaks its quality. What a great price to boot. I'm an antiques lover but wanted to invest in a newer clock as it's so expensive getting old clocks tuned and/or fixed. This clock fits right in to my ca. 1924 Colonial Revival interior. My husband and I are extremely pleased with the Hermle Austen Clock (we chose the Cherry finished case, with the quartz movement). We researched for some time before deciding on this chiming, mantle clock by Hermle. First, the quality is excellent, with a German-made movement and an American-made case. Also, the Cherry finish is perfectly even, and the brass dial and handle are lovely, subtle tones. Just as important, the chimes sound wonderful -- almost as though we were in London and hearing Big Ben from a distance (there are 3 options for the sound of the chimes, we use Westminster). I purchased this mantel clock to replace the Astoria Grand that I recently got here at Wayfair. The Astoria clock face is bright and has gold numbers making it hard to tell the time from just 10 feet away. This Howard Miller has a darker clock face with black Roman numerals and I can tell the time from the kitchen which is nearly 30 feet away. This clock is bigger and is also made of wood (thin) and it should because it's four times the price of the Astoria. Both clocks keep time accurately. Where the Howard Miller clock comes up weak is the chimes. They sound anemic compared to the Astoria. I decided to keep both clocks and placed the Astoria Grand in the sports bar room.. Albert. I'm really happy with the clock. The reason I gave it 4 stars, rather than 5 is because when I placed it on my shelf I saw it wasn't level. When I turned it upside down, I noticed that the protective strips covered the whole leg on one side & only partially covered the other leg, leaving it wobbly.
