Kilims and hand-knotted rugs without the pile. Knotted by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands of the weave to produce a flat surface with no pile. Generally knotted on horizontal looms, this weaving technique produces crisp geometrical designs. Doris Leslie Blau
A hand-knotted wool rug made in the 1950s in Palestine. This antique Bezalel rug displays a panoply of Hebrew letters and Jewish symbols, each with its own meaning for the scholarly eye to discern. The centerpiece of this carpet is a lit candelabra and, to emphasize its symbolism, the main field is dotted with smaller candelabras as well. The colors are somber, in charcoal and camel, with a few red and ivory accents, with respect to the religious nature of the design. This rug has tassels on its shorter edges, as per tradition.

The Anatolian plateau is where the weaving of oriental carpets originated. Rich in tradition and pride, each of the villages of the area produced a certain design and colors that the neighbors rarely copied. These antiques were largely illustrated in historical European paintings. Their bold geometrical designs and soft colors made them the favorites of interior designers.
