Generally knotted on horizontal looms, this technique produces crisp geometrical designs. Being lighter in weight and softer to the touch than traditional pile carpets, Kilims were also used as sofa covers, drapes, pillows, table covers, and wall hangings as tapestries and insulation from the extreme cold.
