A second-quarter 20th century American Hooked area rug, with a modern allover tile pattern of alternating geometric designs and floral sprays in ivory, pale pinks, and greens within a thin solid border. American Rugs as Important Folk Art in 20th Century. It wasn’t until the dawn of the 20th century that the craft of making American rugs started to be considered important folk art and spread all over the country, becoming one of the favorite pastimes , as well as the object of interest of renowned artists. Certainly, classic carpets have also quite early begun to be produced in the United States. The vogue for floor coverings came around 1830 when factories started making machine-woven American hooked wool rugs for the rich and wealthy. However, the hooked carpets and rag rags, along with the creations by Native Americans, such as Navajo antique area rugs, are today synonymous with American vintage-looking rugs rather than any other type.

A modern second quarter 20th-century Chinese oriental rug, the cinnamon field with an overall pattern of floral roundels and leafy vinery with delicate scrolling interlace beneath an overblown contrasting polychromatic bouquet of sensuous blossoms and delicate vinery near the lower right corner. These tend to be more open and spacious than the antique oriental rugs from Western Asia. Maintained mostly in blues, golds, ivories, and beiges, with classical symbols of longevity, elaborate lotus blossoms, chrysanthemums, cloud-band motifs, foo-dogs, and birds, antique Chinese vintage rugs are frequently visible in paintings from as early as the T'ang Period. In contrast to earlier Chinese antique rugs, the twentieth-century Chinese Art Deco rugs can be quite spare in design and quite radical in color, catering to the western taste shaped by the birth of the modernist movement. They are often comprised of geometric or abstract patterns. The most recognizable rugs from the 1920s and 1930 were made by Walter Nichols – the American who manufactured deco carpets in Tientsin.
