Michael Aram
The Golden Ginkgo collection takes its inspiration from the intricacies of form and texture found in foliage from around the world. By interpreting plant forms in cast metal, Aram presents work that is evocative of a natural environment transformed and redefined. "These pieces have wonderfully undulating leaves, which create an almost rococo surface of playful, delicate, and intricate forms. By combining the individually sculpted leaves, the natural forms join to create a complex pattern. I've tried to capture that sense of movement and fragility in metal."
It is lovely. Michael Aram is a true artist. I hope to purchase more pieces in the future.. Pamela. Athens, AL. 2025-02-26 19:22:15
The "Faith" sculpture takes its inspiration from the Khor Virap monastery which is the symbolic birthplace of Christianity in Armenia. It was at Khor Virap (Armenian for "deep dungeon") where the man who would become Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned in a pit for 14 years before he helped turn Armenia into the first Christian nation. Before attaining sainthood, Grigor Lusavorich was held in the bottom of a pit, where he was secretly fed by a local Christian woman who kept him alive. Later, after curing King Trdat III of a disease, he became the religious mentor of the monarch. During this time, Grigor would be instrumental in converting the king to Christianity. In 301 AD, King Trdat III proclaimed Christianity as the state religion of Armenia - marking the first nation to adopt Christianity officially. I first visited Khor Virap as a teenager over 40 years ago. The feeling I got while climbing through a small hole and descending into the dungeon where St. Gregory was thrown to die is something that I will never forget. The idea that a man could survive in those conditions for so many years was astonishing to me and is a testament to the depth of his Christian faith.

The Espalier ornament collection portrays a series of unique objects that celebrate symbols of the holiday season. Whether seen individually or as a group, they evoke a sense of charm and fantasy with the undeniable signature of Michael's style. Drawing profoundly from Michael's background as a sculptor, each piece emerges from hand-sculpted clay and offers a child-like quality with an inherent depth of meaning. "Espalier ornaments hold a special meaning for me, along with millions of people across the world. Each one is like a little jewel, with its own story and its connections. Every year, they make their highly anticipated appearance and it feels like they bring a particular magic with them. The whole process is like a profound family ritual that sweetly symbolizes everything the holidays are about."
The Flights of Fancy collection is a series of unique objects that celebrate whimsy in daily life. Whether seen individually or among other pieces, they evoke a sense of charm and fantasy. Drawing profoundly from Aram's background as a sculptor, each piece emerges from hand-sculpted clay and offers a child-like quality with an inherent depth of meaning. This sculpture is probably the most personal of all for me. It is inspired by a children's book called Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me by Eric Carle, which is a bedtime favorite in my house. In the story, a girl dreams of dancing with the moon and her father begins a wondrous journey to bring it down to her. It's a simple but magical story that reminds us all to dream...that in the world of our imagination, all things are possible. In my work, I chose to put a pillow and piggy (my son's favorite stuffed animal that he can't sleep without) in the bed, suggesting that, while dreaming, the entire bed transforms into an immense ladder... tall enough to reach the moon.

Each signed and numbered sculpture is limited to 500 editions, each individually crafted so that no two pieces are ever exactly alike. "There is a majestic old magnolia tree behind my townhouse in New York City. Originally, the gardens behind the row of houses were combined and planted as an arboretum. The magnolia had survived and now nobly towers over several yards. Although I love it when the tree is in bloom, I am particularly fond of bringing beautiful branches into the house once the tree is pruned."
The Heart collection is built around the simple but universal symbol of love, hope, friendship, and caring. The shape of the heart creates instant responses in us all and carries a world of meaning that changes according to the intent of both the giver and the recipient. In Aram's version, the classic motif is interpreted through ancient techniques of handcraftsmanship. "These heart pieces are all unique as they are hand forged and cut. There is an individuality to each object, just as our hearts and expressions of love are different from person to person, from moment to moment. I imagine that as we use these simple objects, they serve as nostalgic mementos of love."

Beautiful sculpture. When the sun shines through the window and reflects onto the head it glows. My only complaint was the delay in receiving, as the first shipment was lost and had to be reordered.. Karen. Scottsdale, AZ. 2019-12-15 14:52:28
These limited-edition sculptures are handmade artistic explorations inspired by objects and ideas that capture the imagination. Each sculpture is individually crafted so that no two pieces are ever exactly alike. "This piece was created from a small sculptural study I did many years ago. The vision of an enormous wing exemplifies a desire to grow and take flight while the idea of an egg suggests new beginnings. It is an image that represents bursting free and spreading your wings. Overall, this represents the idea of progression and energy, and also of our innate power to shape our paths and define our futures". "There is such power in narrative images for me. The shapes are obvious and immediate and, at the same time, impressionistic and lyrical - the way a small child might imagine the scenes in a story he's being told. I've always been fascinated by objects of ritual. The idea that an object can have such deep, emotional significance to so many people is deeply moving."

The sculptures are individually crafted so that no two pieces are ever exactly alike. The moon gates are inspired by traditional round passageways found in Chinese landscape architecture which act as entry and exit points to the garden. The circular elements are symbolic of the idea of completion, representing and celebrating the cohesiveness of the family, as members pass through the gate to return home. Another interpretation is that, as the moon, the opening is symbolic of the cycle of life, and renewal as the full moon marks wholeness and is suggestive of new beginnings. "I love thinking of these sculptures as a portal into nature. By looking at the moon gate, I am reminded of the delicate balance between man and nature, and my need for connection between my home life and the beauty and abundance of nature."
