Michael Aram
The Golden Ginkgo collection takes its inspiration from the intricacies of form and texture found in foliage from around the world. By interpreting plant forms in cast metal, Aram presents work that is evocative of a natural environment transformed and redefined. "These pieces have wonderfully undulating leaves, which create an almost rococo surface of playful, delicate, and intricate forms. By combining the individually sculpted leaves, the natural forms join to create a complex pattern. I've tried to capture that sense of movement and fragility in metal."
It is lovely. Michael Aram is a true artist. I hope to purchase more pieces in the future.. Pamela. Athens, AL. 2025-02-26 19:22:15

The "Faith" sculpture takes its inspiration from the Khor Virap monastery which is the symbolic birthplace of Christianity in Armenia. It was at Khor Virap (Armenian for "deep dungeon") where the man who would become Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned in a pit for 14 years before he helped turn Armenia into the first Christian nation. Before attaining sainthood, Grigor Lusavorich was held in the bottom of a pit, where he was secretly fed by a local Christian woman who kept him alive. Later, after curing King Trdat III of a disease, he became the religious mentor of the monarch. During this time, Grigor would be instrumental in converting the king to Christianity. In 301 AD, King Trdat III proclaimed Christianity as the state religion of Armenia - marking the first nation to adopt Christianity officially. I first visited Khor Virap as a teenager over 40 years ago. The feeling I got while climbing through a small hole and descending into the dungeon where St. Gregory was thrown to die is something that I will never forget. The idea that a man could survive in those conditions for so many years was astonishing to me and is a testament to the depth of his Christian faith.

The limited-edition sculptures are handmade artistic explorations inspired by objects and ideas that capture Michael's imagination. Each signed and numbered sculpture is limited to 500 editions, each individually crafted so that no two pieces are ever exactly alike. "There is a majestic old magnolia tree behind my townhouse in New York City. Originally, the gardens behind the row of houses were combined and planted as an arboretum. The magnolia had survived and now nobly towers over several yards. Although I love it when the tree is in bloom, I am particularly fond of bringing beautiful branches into the house once the tree is pruned."
The Butterfly Ginkgo collection celebrates the representation of flora as fauna. Michael's fascination with a particular type of ginkgo tree, the Ginkgo Biloba, or "Butterfly Ginkgo", which grows with a double leaf reminiscent of a butterfly's wings, gave rise to a fantasia image of the plant. Executed at the highest level of handcraftsmanship, each piece is rendered in solid brass with hand-etched cocoon-shaped vessels. The pieces in the collection are a tour de force of the handcrafted process, capturing the poetic spirit that is so deeply indicative of Michael's work.
Pomegranate's limited edition sculptures are handmade artistic explorations inspired by objects and ideas that capture Michael's imagination. The sculptures are individually crafted so that no two pieces are ever exactly alike. The moon gates are inspired by traditional round passageways found in Chinese landscape architecture which act as entry and exit points to the garden. The circular elements are symbolic of the idea of completion, representing and celebrating the cohesiveness of the family, as members pass through the gate to return home. Another interpretation is that, as the moon, the opening is symbolic of the cycle of life, and renewal as the full moon marks wholeness and is suggestive of new beginnings. "I love thinking of these sculptures as a portal into nature. By looking at the moon gate, I am reminded of the delicate balance between man and nature, and my need for connection between my home life and the beauty and abundance of nature."
The Olive Branch collection is one of the best-known and most loved of Michael's motifs. The simple forms create objects that serve wonderfully as stunning individual gifts or an exuberant table setting that decorates an entire moment of your life. The theme itself captures all the most distinctive aspects of Michael's work - narrative strength, deep symbolism, and extraordinary sculptural expression. "The Olive Branch has always held a powerful meaning for me representing both peace and victory. In designing functional objects with natural forms, there is a mingled sense of fragility and intensity. For me, it is like nature spreading through my interior spaces - like a magical olive grove sweetly willing its way into my home."
The Pomegranate collection takes its inspiration from one of the most universal and ancient symbols in the world. The fruit has been prized across the globe, across cultures, and across time as a representation of life, rebirth, and renewal as well as fertility and union. "I grew up around pomegranates - from their use as natural dyes on the antique rugs I used to crawl on as a baby to an integral ingredient in the food that I love. When I'm at my home in New Delhi, I wake each morning to the taste of freshly squeezed juice. The color, the smell, the delicate flavor all make it feel like a magical elixir to me."

The Heart collection is built around the simple but universal symbol of love, hope, friendship, and caring. The shape of the heart creates instant responses in us all and carries a world of meaning that changes according to the intent of both the giver and the recipient. In Aram's version, the classic motif is interpreted through ancient techniques of handcraftsmanship. "These heart pieces are all unique as they are hand forged and cut. There is an individuality to each object, just as our hearts and expressions of love are different from person to person, from moment to moment. I imagine that as we use these simple objects, they serve as nostalgic mementos of love."
The Espalier ornament collection portrays a series of unique objects that celebrate symbols of the holiday season. Whether seen individually or as a group, they evoke a sense of charm and fantasy with the undeniable signature of Michael's style. Drawing profoundly from Michael's background as a sculptor, each piece emerges from hand-sculpted clay and offers a child-like quality with an inherent depth of meaning. "Espalier ornaments hold a special meaning for me, along with millions of people across the world. Each one is like a little jewel, with its own story and its connections. Every year, they make their highly anticipated appearance and it feels like they bring a particular magic with them. The whole process is like a profound family ritual that sweetly symbolizes everything the holidays are about."
The Seasonal collection celebrates a favorite time of year. Handcrafted in traditional styles, each piece in the collection is reimagined with ancient techniques, capturing the individual vibrations inherent in the handmade process. "Halloween is my kids' favorite holiday and what a delight to bring out these pumpkins as a sign of the season! I love their shimmer of contrasting metals and mercury glass. The vibrant colors of fall make it my favorite season, and I like keeping these on display through Thanksgiving."

The Tree of Life collection takes its inspiration from the imagery that floats around classic storytelling. Whether the objects are seen individually or grouped, they evoke a sense of charm and fantasy. Drawing profoundly from Michael's background as a sculptor, each piece emerges from hand-sculpted clay and offers a child-like quality with an inherent depth of meaning. "There is such power in narrative images for me. There is a feeling that we're creating an entire imaginary world, building designs around interactive themes that are familiar to all of us. The shapes are obvious and immediate and, at the same time, impressionistic and lyrical - the way a small child might imagine the scenes in a story he's being told. The image of the Tree of Life is one of my favorites. It is an idea that is so widely expressed in all cultures and by all religions that it becomes a universal symbol of hope."
