Michael Aram
The Pomegranate collection takes its inspiration from one of the most universal and ancient symbols in the world. The fruit has been prized across the globe, across cultures, and across time as a representation of life, rebirth, and renewal as well as fertility and union. "I grew up around pomegranates - from their use as natural dyes on the antique rugs I used to crawl on as a baby to an integral ingredient in the food that I love. When I'm at my home in New Delhi, I wake each morning to the taste of freshly squeezed juice. The color, the smell, the delicate flavor all make it feel like a magical elixir to me."
The Olive Branch collection is one of the best-known and most loved of Michael's motifs. The simple forms create objects that serve wonderfully as stunning individual gifts or an exuberant table setting that decorates an entire moment of your life. The theme itself captures all the most distinctive aspects of Michael's work - narrative strength, deep symbolism, and extraordinary sculptural expression. "The Olive Branch has always held a powerful meaning for me representing both peace and victory. In designing functional objects with natural forms, there is a mingled sense of fragility and intensity. For me, it is like nature spreading through my interior spaces - like a magical olive grove sweetly willing its way into my home."
The Vintage Bloom collection evokes a sentimental interpretation of nature as inspired by Michael's love of old botanical prints. The mixed metals and delicate enamel finishes capturing a sense of nostalgia for the eclectic glamour of the 1940s.
The Butterfly Ginkgo collection celebrates the representation of flora as fauna. Michael's fascination with a particular type of ginkgo tree, the Ginkgo Biloba, or "Butterfly Ginkgo", which grows with a double leaf reminiscent of a butterfly's wings, gave rise to a fantasia image of the plant. Executed at the highest level of handcraftsmanship, each piece is rendered in solid brass with hand-etched cocoon-shaped vessels. The pieces in the collection are a tour de force of the handcrafted process, capturing the poetic spirit that is so deeply indicative of Michael's work. "The first time I saw this tree, it looked like it had been completely overtaken by butterflies as if they would all take flight the moment I walked too close or made a noise. The idea that the leaves could evoke the beauty of butterflies was magical to me, like trees that can metamorphose from flora to fauna in the blink of an eye."

The Palm collection is inspired by the beauty of a windswept palm tree and the perfectly imperfect shapes of woven palm leaves and fallen fronds. The warm antique gold finish and the intricate sculpted textures exude comfortable luxury and graciousness. "I was having lunch with friends on a veranda overlooking the sea when I looked down to the lawn and saw a fallen palm frond. The leaves were all twisted and curled, yet they stood out magnificently against the otherwise perfect landscape. It made me think of the passage of time, and the bountiful gifts of the palm tree, which provides everything from food to shelter."
The Calla Lily collection is inspired by the beauty of the flower. The architectural, curving shape of the flower is strong, yet suggests an intense sensuality. The flower is associated with weddings as is symbolic of purity and innocence. "I was thinking of the romance of weddings and how bouquets often use flowers that carry symbolism. I remembered a picture of a woman I had seen holding her bouquet of calla lilies. She was classic, timeless, and modern all at once. There is something so alluring about the billowy flowers and arching stems which feel contemporary, yet still utterly romantic."
The Heart collection is built around the simple but universal symbol of love, hope, friendship, and caring. The shape of the heart creates instant responses in us all and carries a world of meaning that changes according to the intent of both the giver and the recipient. In Aram's version, the classic motif is interpreted through ancient techniques of handcraftsmanship. "These heart pieces are all unique as they are hand forged and cut. There is an individuality to each object, just as our hearts and expressions of love are different from person to person, from moment to moment. I imagine that as we use these simple objects, they serve as nostalgic mementos of love."

The Golden Ginkgo collection takes its inspiration from the intricacies of form and texture found in foliage from around the world. By interpreting plant forms in cast metal, Aram presents work that is evocative of a natural environment transformed and redefined. "These pieces have wonderfully undulating leaves, which create an almost rococo surface of playful, delicate, and intricate forms. By combining the individually sculpted leaves, the natural forms join to create a complex pattern. I've tried to capture that sense of movement and fragility in metal.".
The Black Orchid collection celebrates the ethereal spirit of the orchid plant. Symbolic of purity and grace, this collection captures the delicate nature of orchids while also expressing a quality of mystery and sensuality. "There is something so captivating about orchids. In black, orchids appear more seductive, like a woman wearing a black velvet gown in a glassy urban high-rise. The dark atmosphere of the Black Orchid is more sensual to me, like the afterglow of a beautiful evening. I am fascinated by this mystery behind a Black Orchid's origin, and the question of if they truly exist in nature."
The White Orchid collection celebrates the ethereal spirit of the orchid plant. Symbolic of purity and grace, this collection captures the delicate nature of orchids while also expressing a quality of mystery and sensuality. "There is something so captivating about orchids. In white, there is a sense of purity that I associate with new beginnings. I imagine the calm solitude of an early morning or the eagerness of a blossoming friendship."
