While each leaf is expressed as a sculptural object, Michael has yet again managed to infuse function into his forms, making them perfect for the most elemental moments in our daily lives.

Judaica comes from Michael's fascination with objects of ritual. Regardless of the faith with which they are connected, they are imbued with profound energy and meaning that holds a very special place for Michael Aram. Whether it is a unique object or derived from a motif with a broad collection, each piece is created with a particular sense of reverence and care in both the function and the design. "This is such a fun object! It suggests its function through its form. A matzah, matzah plate...I do that a lot and it always strikes me with such a sense of whimsy and surprise. The surface texture of the matzah, when it is interpreted in cast metal, also creates an unexpected beauty. I love that it comes with a bag for hiding so it creates a ritual for kids and a special memory of family events."

The Butterfly Ginkgo collection celebrates the representation of flora as fauna. Michael's fascination with a particular type of ginkgo tree, the Ginkgo Biloba, or "Butterfly Ginkgo", which grows with a double leaf reminiscent of a butterfly's wings, gave rise to a fantasia image of the plant. Executed at the highest level of handcraftsmanship, each piece is rendered in solid brass with hand-etched cocoon-shaped vessels. The pieces in the collection are a tour de force of the handcrafted process, capturing the poetic spirit that is so deeply indicative of Michael's work. "The first time I saw this tree, it looked like it had been completely overtaken by butterflies as if they would all take flight the moment I walked too close or made a noise. The idea that the leaves could evoke the beauty of butterflies was magical to me, like trees that can metamorphose from flora to fauna in the blink of an eye."

The Calla Lily collection is inspired by the beauty of the calla lily flower. The architectural, curving shape of the flower is strong, yet suggests an intense sensuality. The flower is associated with weddings and is symbolic of purity and innocence. "I was thinking of the romance of weddings and how bouquets often use flowers that carry symbolism. I remembered a picture of a woman I had seen holding her bouquet of calla lilies. She was classic, timeless, and modern all at once. There is something so alluring about the billowy flowers and arching stems which feel contemporary, yet still utterly romantic."
