Rug & Kilim
Made with hand-knotted wool and featuring medallion and floral patterns, this 3x3 contemporary rug from Rug & Kilim’s Modern Classics collection represents a new line inspired by vintage and antique Oushak rugs. On The Design:One fundamental idea that R & K Principal, Jahanshah Nazmiyal has long taught to his colleagues and teammates is that the best handmade modern rugs are made after one masters the classics. This piece is our collection’s contribution to classic styles reinterpreted completely in a modern fashion, reflecting a painterly interpretation of “ushak” design, (often spelled “Oushak” in our field). Admirers of the craft will note a special new yarn that our Principal is proud to introduce to Oushak designs—a construction which has a notable weight and sheen to it in cool colors seldom seen in this style. This Persian-inspired Oushak presents stylized botanical forms against a field of ivory and celadon. Vertical flowering stems create a garden-like rhythm in the central panel, while russets provide focal accent. The side panels in atmospheric gray-blue feature abstracted vine work and scattered floral motifs. Keen eyes will further admire the outstanding sense of depth in the patterns, achieved through detail and use of color alone, making it a particularly special piece of meticulous craft. It’s both an elegant choice for the modern space and a thoughtful contribution to one of the most regal provenances in handmade Oriental rugs.
