Xavier Clarisse, Durban based artist, and designer, was born in Lyon, France, and spent his young life cultivating a passion for design. He attended 'L’Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts' specializing in sculpture and product design and has worked in France, the UK, and now South Africa. Living in South Africa Xavier is inspired by his local surroundings - both nature and the local aesthetic. The abundant subtropical vegetation, vibrant color, and diversity of his hometown Durban are reflected in many of his designs. As a maker, he finds inspiration in the process of exploring materials and likes to experiment with these in both established ways and those of his own development. Running through Xavier's work is a theme of the theatricality of the object itself, of interactivity, movement, and playfulness. Xavier's current area of design focus is lighting and he has a range of sculptural light designs most notably the Delicious Light and the Blade Light.

The "Delicious Monster" wall sconce is inspired by nature and the philodendron monstera plants found throughout the coastal regions of southern Africa. Conceived and handmade in the Durban, South Africa studio of Xavier Clarisse, each piece is crafted from quality, locally sourced, vegetable-tanned leather. A stainless steel skeleton transforms the flat leather fronds into a three-dimensional hanging sculpture. Not suitable for outdoor use.

Xavier Clarisse has translated these classic natural shapes into elegant sculptural pieces. Conceived and handmade in their Durban, South Africa studio, each piece is crafted from quality, locally sourced, vegetable-tanned leather. The sconce features leather that the artist has treated using a specially developed technique to strengthen the material and ensure its durability while the dyes and finishing products are internationally certified and free from harmful substances. The leather is embossed to achieve a sculpted and perforated form using a traditional press and folded to create its leaf-like shape. All hard-wired lighting is UL-listed for dry locations.
