The 1st Baron Bourchier was born several hundred years too late to enjoy hanging NUT throughout his shadowy castle. Which is a pity, because the granny knot on which NUT is based sat proudly on the heraldic badge of the Bourchier family. We however are fortunate to live in an era when NUT can adorn our own little castles; a powerful symbol of our exquisite breeding. We can thank the brilliant Marivi Calvo and Ray Power for their valor and insight. Long may they reign supreme.

It was way back in 1858 when German mathematicians August Ferdinand Mobius and Johann Benedict Listing discovered the mysterious Mobius Strip, with its eternally flowing surface. In 2013 Ray Power created LINK. And so the story of infinite geometry continues through the magic of light.

MARUJA, THE DO-IT-YOURSELF LAMP. An original self-assembly pendant, Maruja was designed by the fresh-faced Gazpacho Studio—it is LZF’s first flat-pack fixture. A contemporary lamp, Maruja’s design is simultaneously unfussy and decorative. Maruja is a name whose origins lie in Galicia, and signifies both femininity and strength. The do-it-yourself Maruja is packaged with all the components needed to assemble the lamp: wood veneer strips (in several sizes), a circular frame, and pins. Maruja is easily constructed, without the need for any tools or adhesives. Using a pin, each wooden strip is clipped onto the circular frame—insert a light bulb, and you will have created an elegant, handmade lamp. The wood veneer strips hang and move freely, and when illuminated, Maruja sparkles with life.

I have used this piece before a few times. The design is simply beautiful, the quality is sublime. Egbert-Jan Lam of Netherlands-based Burojet Design Studio created the ‘embroidered’ Stitches family of lamps. Called Mopti, Tombuctú, Djenné and Bamako—after towns and cities in the West African nation of Mali—each lamp has its own distinct pattern. To make an individual lamp, veneer lengths are crafted in a traditional sewing fashion: the pattern is marked out, cut and then repeated. Where hemming is normally used to complete a garment, the Stitches lamp has a visible hemstitch through which light radiates. The unique shape of each Stitches lamp is an allusion to the adobe mosques found across Mali. Moreover, the Stitches lamps embody Mali’s long history as a producer of embroidery.

Estela is a captivating capsule of light. In Estela, Mayice studio designed a clean, clear, single piece of borosilicate glass. Hand-blown by the accomplished artisan Eduardo Garuti, the glass envelopes a cylinder-like wood veneer diffuser. The wood veneer houses a dimmable LED light source, and a square opening on one side emits downward light that is softened by the glass. Offering a seamless connection between both glass and wood, Estela is a radiant lamp with a celestial-like quality. Similar to Dune, Estela’s natural imperfections, a characteristic of hand-blown glass, add to its warmth and elegance. Each lamp is signed by the artisan, Eduardo Garuti.

In the year 1913, Russian artist Kasimir Malevich painted a black square on a white background. Somebody referred to the piece as minimalism. And so a movement was coined. We think Malevich would approve of the Gea, created by that master of design Marivi Calvo. Like the work of Frank Stella, Phillip Glass, Samuel Beckett and Raymond Carver, the art pared back to its bare essentials. Less is more. Embrace purity.

Designed by Ray Power, Lola showcases the designer’s ability to create imaginative three-dimensional forms. Lola is a conical lamp with an intricate geometric pattern. A veritable labour of love, Lola’s shape went through many iterations, drawings and prototypes, before arriving at the finished form. A particularly piquant Spanish name, Lola is very much alive, sensuous, and intriguing. An avant-garde lamp, Lola’s complex woven veneer construction is beautifully accentuated when lit. The textural pattern of Lola’s woven wood veneer shade comes alive in the Lola Suspension lamp. Lola’s unique construction is testament to the skill of LZF’s craftspeople. The Lola Suspension is available in Ivory White or Natural Beech wood veneers. The metal canopy is available in Matt Nickel.

Dune is a sculptural light whose shape is intriguingly amorphous. Designed by Madrid-based Mayice, Dune is a single piece of hand-blown borosilicate glass, enveloping a wood veneer diffuser with a seedpod-like opening on one side. The glass is hand-blown by Eduardo Garuti, an accomplished artisan. With mastery and great dexterity, Garuti is able to reveal the natural beauty found in glass. Dune's distinctive shape is made up of two symmetrical ends, and an irregular, bulb-shaped centre. The wood veneer diffuser houses the lamp's dimmable LED light source, and downward light from the seedpod-like opening is softened by the glass. Each Dune lamp is unique, the beauty found in the imperfection of hand-blown glass, with its almost wabi-sabi quality, ensures Dune is like a piece of art. Indeed, each lamp is signed by the artisan, Eduardo Garuti.
