Here is an absolutely delightful mid-century modern Scandinavian rug. a piece woven in Sweden, with a composition attributed to the celebrated Belgian surrealist painter, Rene Magritte. A giant of the mid-century Surrealism school of art, Magritte’s body of work remains immediately recognizable today, especially his paintings of traditionally dressed men, in suits and bowler caps, whose faces are obscured by floating green apples or other random items. These figures are often presented in impossible or outlandish settings, the absurdism and surrealism of which challenge the observer’s preconceived notions of what is to be expected in a painting, and what is not to be expected. This delightful vintage carpet works on very much the same level, its masterful composition begins a series of questions that may or may not have answers. At the center of the rug is a figure that very clearly suggests a reclined, nude woman, with wide patches of whites and plums making up her body. This is, however, the most concrete element of the work, with other colors arranged into unorthodox geometric shapes, stacked and arranged in what appears to be random. or at least not immediately apparent. order. The result is an explosive dynamism that pulls the observer ever closer in. A beautiful and intriguing mid-century rug, this Swedish rug designed by the great Magritte is a delightful composition of the highest order.

Made in the shape of an ancient Chinese gold ingot, this tabletop ornament symbolizes good luck in wealth and fortune. Crafted with precision, the piece utilizes an auspicious and culturally traditional shape with a loose-set crystal ball to bring good balance in life.---------------------Founded in 1987 by studio glass artists Loretta H. Yang and Chang Yi, LIULI has grown from a modest workshop in Taiwan to Asia’s leading crystal art brand. Liuli is the phonetic spelling of the Han Dynasty term for glass art and is used to honor the Chinese heritage and culture. Records show that thousands of years ago, the Chinese were highly skilled in pâte de verre a.k.a lost wax casting but the craft was subsequently forgotten. Yang and Chang revived the craft and reintroduced it into the international arena.Today, LIULI has 41 galleries worldwide, and Loretta’s and Chang Yi’s artworks are collected at more than 35 museums around the world. These include the Victoria and Albert museum in London, the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C., and the Bowers Museum in Orange County. LIULI has received multiple awards, some of which are iF Design and German Red Dot.---------------------Lawrence & Scott is an authorized LIULI Crystal Art showroom.
