This 14x17 antique Aubusson rug is an exciting new addition to Rug & Kilim’s European rug collection—a masterpiece of the French Neoclassical flatweave style, handwoven in wool and believed to originate from France in the mid-to-late 19th century. On the Design: Admirers of the craft may appreciate this transitional rug among the works of a special workshop from its period. Designers and connoisseurs will particularly note this rug’s masterful execution of symmetry, scale, and movement among its countless beauties—all exemplary of the French tapestry weave style, like few that remain of its kind today. Though its range of hues and the detail they complement are among its many beauties, there’s a particular emphasis of mocha brown, cream, teal and pink tones at play in this rug. Its large-scale medallions favor oval- and circle-shaped cartouches, with elaborate floral sprays unfurling with a fabulous grandeur and impressionistic detail. So too is the detailing, not just in the quintessential sense of impressionism of an Aubusson like those in the cartouches of the corners, but in the graceful subtlety of the field’s execution of muted florals. This honestly brings more attention to the finesse of their execution, and an element dimension that’s exceptional even for this provenance renowned for its works of majesty and detail. It’s also an oversized rug, with a particularly versatile large size with vast applications in interior design today. Altogether it’s a piece as deeply personal in its subtext as it is in the details and beauties that distinguish it in our craft—both a masterpiece and a true collector’s rug, teeming with history and culture. Condition: This Antique Aubusson rug is in great condition for its age and origin, with some minor color variation visible in the field undertones.

A second-quarter 20th-century American hooked rug runners, having an overall folk-motif tile pattern formed of stepped rows of octagons, each containing tulips and roses in a pale color palette. From the early 1800s through the middle years of the twentieth century these original compositions allowed the rug makers an opportunity to freely express their creativity. Rag antique oriental rugs were originally created out of necessity, with limited supplies and only the simplest tools used to braid and crochet useful floor coverings from scraps of discarded fabric. Nowadays, American Rugs and vintage area rugs are not only perceived through the prism of craft but also significant art that has influenced the world weaving tradition in general. Because of their authenticity and beauty, antique American hooked rugs and rag rugs are keenly sought after.

The French Savonnerie rugs factory, located on the site of the present Musee d'Art Moderne, inherited its name from the soap-making factory it took over at the behest of Louis XIII. From 1660 until 1743 Savonnerie was a manufacturer of royale, carrying out commissions for French Savonnerie rugs and carpets specifically designed for the Royal palaces. In the 1770s, the tapestry looms at Aubusson in the Cruze Valley near Limoges were converted to produce flat-woven antique oriental rugs and carpets under royal warrant.
