A second-quarter 20th-century American hooked rug runners, having an overall folk-motif tile pattern formed of stepped rows of octagons, each containing tulips and roses in a pale color palette. From the early 1800s through the middle years of the twentieth century these original compositions allowed the rug makers an opportunity to freely express their creativity. Rag antique oriental rugs were originally created out of necessity, with limited supplies and only the simplest tools used to braid and crochet useful floor coverings from scraps of discarded fabric. Nowadays, American Rugs and vintage area rugs are not only perceived through the prism of craft but also significant art that has influenced the world weaving tradition in general. Because of their authenticity and beauty, antique American hooked rugs and rag rugs are keenly sought after.
A modern mid-20th century French Deco rug with a minimalist geometric pattern with an open beige field with diagonally opposed checkered motifs in the corners in orange, beige, and brown. Although generally, European Art Deco rugs from all places in the world share certain common features and are rather distinguishable from antique carpets, they differ quite significantly from one another depending on the exact place of their origin. While a Persian antique rug from Tabriz may be easily confused with a similar creation coming from a different weaving center, or even a different country, like Turkey, vintage rugs, especially those from the first half of the 20th century, are much more diverse in terms of style and applied patterns. Inspired by new trends back then yet still deeply rooted in tradition, and sometimes folklore, of a given country, vintage carpets exhibit an immense array of designs and aesthetics characteristic to the nations that produced them. We would like to present some major categories of vintage rug designs and show which way of thinking and historical background influenced particular weaving styles. Art Deco is a style of visual arts, architecture, and design that first appeared in France just before World War I. The Art Deco movement led to a fast evolution of the rug and textile design, among other art forms. Rug design evolved from traditional floral and highly ornamental to a style of angular elegance with geometric, abstract, and modern figurative motifs. The design is frequently spare, geometric, and architectural. The rugs created during this period remain elegant and refined to this day.
An early 20th century French Art Deco area rug, the oatmeal field with a mirrored landscape design in shades of purple and red with buildings, clouds, cypresses, and striped hills within a solid purple stripe. European Art Deco rugs – are essential objects of desire of not only vintage trend followers but all aficionados of beauty and sublime design. There is a good reason for such vast recognition as vintage carpets constitute the core of taste and artistry of 20th-century progressive thought. They are clearly defined by the past century’s celebration of new ideas, modern lifestyle, and the Renaissance of all arts which happened about that time. The category of antique rugs in NYC has many faces – there are numerous aspects such as historical period, style, fashion, culture, symbolism, and philosophy which add up to form the dazzling array of vintage carpets. This magnificent modern rug is inspired by the classic art of Bessarabian modern carpet texture weaving. Absolutely all works of the Bessarabian category are highly decorative, and the majority comprise floral and nature-related motifs. Moreover, their patterns usually fit within a black or brown tone background, executed to exhibit the depth and multidimensionality of the design. This European-inspired rug embodies the greatest features of the Bessarabian craft. Its pitch black field proudly bears an exceptionally ornamental design made up of six-radian medallions surrounded by a dense and naturalistic floral pattern. A French Deco vintage rug with a graphic, linear and color-blocked design on a sand background. Art Deco owes its name to the first major exhibition of decorative arts to be held after the First World War: L’Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris in 1925. The supreme elegance of the custom-made interiors at the event set an example for interior designers the world over. Inspired by these innovative aesthetic ideas, artists, designers, craftsmen, and manufacturers from across Europe and America produced a wide range of modern pioneering patterns that delivered a dramatic change of style to furnishings in general, and early 20th-century antique oriental rugs and carpets in particular. Decorative arts of this period, sometimes known as the Machine Age, are characterized by a streamlined appearance. European deco rugs and carpets are woven from the mid-1920s through the 1930s reflecting this style. Although spick and span-new, this magnificent rug comprises all the greatest features of the long and profound art of carpet making. Here we observe an extraordinary merger between the East and the West - the area rug combines the Bessarabian craft and artistic thought with the ancient Oriental tradition of weaving. The field reveals a subtle and detailed design of two flowery medallions, deeply embedded in Bessarabian aesthetics, enclosed into an intricate and opulent cartouche, typical of French Aubusson and Savonnerie masterpieces. However rich and palatial, the modern area rug does not cross the thin line between good taste and moderation. On the contrary, the whole composition is perfectly balanced due to the properly matched color palette. Starting from the background, we have a very delicate shade of beige, almost off-white, which proudly exposes both the camel cartouche borders and the saturated colors of the flowers. Deep and light indigo as well as brick and coral red look truly jewel-like when contrasted with the muted cream hue. As for t`he quality, the black and white flat weave rug has been executed by the hand of the finest wool according to traditional weaving techniques. It ensures its longevity and ever-lasting value. Such a wonder of the weaving art as this European-inspired Bessarabian rug will be a gem in every home as it is genuinely a work of fine art.
