This circa-1945 vintage pair of Swedish tapestry panels by Märta Måås-Fjetterström features an intriguing all-over design of strict geometric abstractions, with red and purple cross-like shapes dominating against a field of neutral gray. Bold, geometrically-themed red borders complete the look of the vintage panels. Maas-Fjetterstrom (1873-1941) was a leading figure in Swedish textile design, with a workshop known for producing well-composed rugs incorporating traditional Swedish and modern motifs. In Sweden, carpets in NYC and vintage rugs have been hand-knotted in wool for centuries, taking on many different forms and functions over the course of time. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the craft was seen as being an important artistic and cultural practice throughout Sweden, and designers began to make Scandinavian rugs that had a broad international appeal. Scandinavian rugs from the mid-twentieth century remain among the most desirable and sought after in the antique rug world.
Who has not heard about Ingegerd Silow? Both master weaver and talented designer, Silow was for a longtime involvement in the development and popularization of Swedish weaving, a craft that is an important part of the country's culture. This Swedish flat weave rug bears the signature of Ingegerd Silow, undoubtedly a sign of her approval. Its masterfully composed color palette is filled with light shades of blue, white, and gray, accompanied by just a tiny bit of yellow to make it more lively. The antique rug pattern is a great example of classic Swedish design - simplistic forms and orderly composition, bound to fit any type of accommodation. On the main field, we can see snowflake-like shapes, connected to each other by straight gray lines. The beautiful fringe on the vintage-looking rugs' top and the bottom parts is a nice finishing touch, which gives it even more charm.

Soft colors and careful proportions balance the artfully crafted visage while creating a solid background of stormy blue-grays and creamy ivory accents. Definitively modern and like a canvas waiting to be decorated, the soft monochromatic segments create a luxurious background that is filled with a growing variety of colorful accents and fluid will-o’-the-wisp motifs that meander across the composition and contribute an airy, veiled texture to this two-dimensional work of art. Shadows, wispy clouds and light-filled layers create a nuanced composition that is ambiguous in an artful manner and begs viewers to develop their own creative interpretation.
