Originating from China in 1890, this antique Peking rug features one of the most distinguished symbols among traditional Chinese and oriental rugs. Hand knotted in high quality wool, the geometric chevron, ruyi cloud, hill, and priest motifs uplift a soaring depiction of a dragon, complemented by further rolling clouds and dragon heads seen above in the gold, blue, and orange-brown colourways. Among antique Chinese rugs, dragons distinctly symbolize power, divinity, and honor, though golden dragons (and in some interpretations, dragons complemented by golden colourways like this piece) surrounded by ruyi clouds are omens of a promising future and good luck.
