Rug & Kilim
Made with hand-knotted wool and featuring floral patterns, this 3x3 contemporary rug from Rug & Kilim’s Modern Classics collection represents a new line inspired by vintage and antique Turkish Oushak rugs. On The Design:One fundamental idea that R & K Principal, Jahanshah Nazmiyal has long taught to his colleagues and teammates is that the best handmade modern rugs are made after one masters the classics. This piece is our collection’s contribution to classic styles reinterpreted completely in a modern fashion, reflecting a painterly interpretation of “ushak” design, (often spelled “Oushak” in our field). Admirers of the craft will note a special new yarn that our Principal is proud to introduce to Oushak designs—a construction which has a notable weight and sheen to it in cool colors seldom seen in this style. The design is complementary to the rustic, old-world charm and transitional whimsy of Oushak rugs that distinguishes them from other, more traditional Oriental rug provenances. One might see an influence from Turkish Oushaks in its playful, almost feminine take on classic patterns, as well as a European sensibility in its fine curvature and dense, elaborate all over floral patterns. Keen eyes will further admire the outstanding sense of depth in the patterns, achieved through detail and use of color alone, making it a particularly special piece of meticulous craft. It’s both an elegant choice for the modern space and a thoughtful contribution to one of the most regal provenances in handmade Oriental rugs.
