This Swedish rug combines together a timeless design and a great skill. Hand-knotted by a skilled artisan, the vintage carpet features an interesting pattern, inspired by classic Scandinavian motifs. Diamond shapes with a smaller cross in the middle, connected by thin lines, look as if someone put them on the empty surface. The resulting depth of composition makes you feel as if you were looking down at something. The colors are toned-down, with dominating cool brown and teal. Occasional hints of yellow and beige lighten the pattern up. The carpet’s design remains timeless, fitting perfectly into both modern and traditional interiors. Swedish Flatweave Rug by Irma Kronlund The traditional Scandinavian antique rug is the rya, made from hand-knotted wool.
This charming modern rya reflects the quintessence of Scandinavian craftsmanship. It was modeled on a modern area rug designed by the great Marianne Richter which she executed in the workshop of Marta Maas Fjetterstrom, and the spirit of both geniuses is visible in every inch of this remarkable fabric. The Swedish shag rug proudly bears the famous sunflower design known as “Solrosen”, with the bold flower head located in the center and its petals gradually spreading out to the edges. The pattern is complemented by a warm and invigorating color palette of rose, hibiscus, burgundy, and orange, paired with mauve, against the ivory background. Although simplistic and bordering on naïve art, the design is actually extremely sophisticated and adjusted to contemporary decorating standards. It has a chance to bring some light and joy to any interior arrangement, from classic to modern. However, the aesthetic side is not the only forte of this fine Swedish-inspired rya rug. Its firm body and the shaggy pile were meticulously hand-knotted of first-rate wool, thanks to which, if properly cared for, it will serve its owners for generations. Lovely and chic, the carpet based on Marianne Richter’s genius design is the answer for those who seek effortless elegance in a timeless dimension. Mid-century Swedish-inspired rug made in India.

This particular antique rug, woven circa 1955, immediately draws the eye with its original design and interesting choice of color. The pattern consists of square splashes in the center, kept together by smaller elements of the composition. While it might seem simple, a closer look reveals the sheer beauty and genius behind it. The color palette consists mostly of earthy browns and yellows, highlighted by pastel gray and blue. The composition is anchored in the center, creating a sense of balance and order. Synthesizing elements of the early 20th century Swedish Grace Movement and influences from her travels abroad, Ingeborg Silow updated the traditional Scandinavian rölakan flatweave carpet for the modern era. Influenced by her predecessor Märta Måås-Fjetterström, Silow continued the legacy of creating woven works exemplary in both design and execution and further revived traditional weaving styles through her partnerships with commercial home furnishing companies. Such collaboration popularized this updated incarnation of Scandinavian minimalism by helping to make such designs broadly available to the public.
This utterly lovely and balanced vintage carpet represents the fine northern craft in a nutshell. It encompasses the three crucial factors that helped to lay the foundation and build the worldwide popularity of Scandinavian design – it is simple, practical, and beautiful. It was signed by its mysterious author with the initials: JR. Its design builds upon the wonders of the awe-inspiring Swedish nature and incorporates a simplistic representation of a wild forest. The geometric trees surround the rectangular main field that is left completely plain and outlined solely by a single gray stripe. Another subtle adornment is the fringe at the shorter sides of the vintage Swedish rag rugs. Kept in a light gray shade with the invigorating addition of dusty green and blue, mustard, dark brown, and beige, the color palette is versatile and utterly fashionable, ready to complement a wide variety of interior décors. Swedish Flat Weave Rug by Irma Kronlund The traditional Scandinavian area rug is the rya, made from hand-knotted wool.
A modern antique rug is woven with a subtly striped field with shades of taupe and shades of yellow. A linear grid sits on top of the stripe and is accented with diamond shapes. Although the designs of antique and vintage Scandinavian woven rugs were originally inspired by imported textiles, they gradually developed into an innately northern expression. Simple geometric patterns and vignettes from everyday life such as bouquets of flowers, a child's sampler, or a pet dog were incorporated into flat woven tapestries or Swedish pile vintage oriental rugs and carpets, adding charm and immediacy to this folk art. A fresh and appealing aesthetic was sustained during the first half of the twentieth century by the weavings of the celebrated Swedish carpet designer Marta Maas-Fjetterstrom and her circle. The simplicity and purity of design in vintage Scandinavian rugs give them immediate relevance and contemporary desirability.
