Hand-knotted in wool and silk, this 8x10 modern rug is a bold addition to the Block Print line of Rug & Kilim’s Modern Classics Collection—a sophisticated and elegant new approach to a historic style. On the Design: Connoisseurs may admire this modern rug with polychromatic hues underscore a repeat of geometric and floral patterns. Though this form represents a more minimalist approach, admirers of the craft and keen eyes will note inspiration from the many provenances known for repeating it in dense, deftly woven designs as this—a thoughtful and elegant new take on a traditional look. The block printing process is one of the oldest in textile design and has seen many adaptations. To wit, many of our designs draw on time-honored, even archaic designs, such as 17th-century Mogul rug patterns that allow admirers of the craft to make their own personal connection. Some of our contributions to the aesthetic include a subtle high-low texture for an added sense of dimension, a wool-and-silk blend that creates a more elegant play of the light, and a wider range of vibrant, contemporary colors that brighten and enrich a room. Above all, comfort was the priority, as it is in all of our custom collections.

Vintage Scandinavian Inspired by Paul Klees Little Drummer Boy Tapestry Rug, origin: Scandinavia, circa: Mid century. Superbly fresh and modernist in feel, even by todays standards, this remarkable vintage carpet features a graphic and iconic Paul Klee design known as The Drummer Boy. This graphic pre-war Paul Klee rug was re-created in textile form decades later yet still captures the modernity of Klees pioneering style. Known for his bold use of color and unique theories, Klee juxtaposes expressive, aggressive crimson and impenetrable jet black hues against a soft, sumptuous ivory field. Paul Klees rough, chalky hand-drawn lines are re-built in a luxurious textile medium that retains the artistic textures and nuances of the expressive lines and abstract symbols. Through color and distilled designs, the artist, Paul Klee, illustrates the essence and perpetual momentum of the iconic drummer boy figure in a playful, youthful manner that is expressive, abstract and inherently modern.

This Swedish rug combines together a timeless design and a great skill. Hand-knotted by a skilled artisan, the vintage carpet features an interesting pattern, inspired by classic Scandinavian motifs. Diamond shapes with a smaller cross in the middle, connected by thin lines, look as if someone put them on the empty surface. The resulting depth of composition makes you feel as if you were looking down at something. The colors are toned-down, with dominating cool brown and teal. Occasional hints of yellow and beige lighten the pattern up. The carpet’s design remains timeless, fitting perfectly into both modern and traditional interiors. Swedish Flatweave Rug by Irma Kronlund The traditional Scandinavian antique rug is the rya, made from hand-knotted wool.

Hand knotted in wool originating from Turkey circa 1960-1969, this mid-century vintage rug joins our midcentury Pasha Collection in celebration of Turkish icon Zeki Müren—among Josh’s hand-picked favorites from this period of iconic style. Connoisseurs will note this play of geometry and color idealizes the post-modern European influences Müren reimagined in his own work, largely unseen in Turkey in his industry before his pioneering work and connoting the joyful, warm sense of movement in this pallet of pink and black with complementary camel gold, burgundy red, blue, and green hues. The pile has been refined to a lower height similar to the appeal of a Kilim or flat weave of this era, bringing out the sense of Shabby Elegance, mild wear and distressed rug aesthetic, consistent with the age of this piece and the denominator of this fabulous, unique collection of mid-century rugs.
