Doris Leslie Blau is proud to have an incredibly vast collection of antique carpets and vintage rugs for sale which will please the eyes and the hands of even the most demanding connoisseurs. Art Deco is a style of visual arts, architecture, and design that first appeared in France just before World War I. The Art Deco movement led to a fast evolution of the rug and textile design, among other art forms. Rug design evolved from traditional floral and highly ornamental to a style of angular elegance with geometric, abstract, and modern figurative motifs. The design is frequently spare, geometric, and architectural. The rugs created during this period remain elegant and refined to this day.

Beautiful Room Size Vintage French Kilim Rug by Artist Antonin Kybal, Rug Type: French Rugs, Circa date: Mid 20th Century. Unlike many art deco rugs, this elegant surface uses whimsically curving and moving lines to draw attention from one section of interest on the French rug to the next. The careful placement of elements creates a unique degree of asymmetry, resulting in a casual arrangement with shapes that still appear to be chosen in a specific order. The vintage rugs lines are divided into black and sage green movements to break up the space even further, and the colors within add certain contrast to the beige background itself. Vibrant red and glowing yellow are selected at key sections around the lines to fill in the spaces made where the lines cross. These spaces, within the flat woven Kilim rug, take on a life of their own, and viewers are taken on a journey through the various twists and turns encountered where the colors and lines meet.

Rug & Kilim
Made with hand-knotted wool circa 1950-1960, this 4x5 antique French tapestry represents a distinguished addition to Rug & Kilim's Tapestry collection—an exceptional example of mid-century French textile design by renowned artist Jean Picart le Doux.On the Design:This antique French tapestry showcases Picart le Doux's masterful integration of decorative art and modernist sensibilities through its captivating underwater scene. Admirers of the craft will appreciate the sophisticated composition featuring eight stylized fish swimming through undulating bands of watery currents rendered in varying shades of green. The arrangement of the aquatic forms creates a perfect balance between structured pattern and organic movement. The artist's refined color palette is centered on rich forest and celadon greens for the water, contrasted with vibrant accents of yellow, orange, blue, and black that define the fantastical fish forms. The white wave patterns and scattered bubble dots provide visual counterpoints that enhance the sense of underwater depth and motion. What distinguishes this piece is its perfect synthesis of decorative charm and artistic sophistication. Picart le Doux, a significant figure in the renaissance of French tapestry art and a collaborator of Jean Lurçat, brings his distinctive graphic sensibility to this composition—creating stylized fish that reference both primitive art forms and modernist abstraction while maintaining their whimsical character. This tapestry embodies the mid-century French commitment to elevating decorative arts to the status of fine art. Its artistic pedigree is confirmed by the artist's signature prominently woven into the lower right corner. As an important example from "l'intérieur d'une collectionneuse" (a collector's interior), this piece represents not only exceptional design but the sophisticated taste culture of post-war France when leading artists turned their attention to textile arts, creating works that bridged functional craft and fine art expression.Condition:This antique French tapestry further enjoys good condition for its age and origin—with only mild wear, though still best suited to exclusive use in wall-hanging projects and similar applications.

Hand-woven in wool and originating in France circa 1970-1980, this 3x5 vintage tapestry is both rare and extremely collectible as one of Jean Picart Le Doux’s signature pieces and as a full-pile piece found in its original great condition today. On the Design: Admirers of the craft will appreciate this exquisite tapestry, signed by the renowned French artist Jean Picart Le Doux, as a masterful example of mid-20th century modernist textile art. It presents a stylized tree of life motif, centrally positioned against a rich, dark background. This iconic symbol serves as the focal point, unifying the entire composition. Picart le Doux employs a warm, autumnal palette dominated by shades of brown, gold, and amber. These earthy tones create a sense of warmth and vitality against the deep, chocolate-brown background. The tree's canopy is depicted as a dense arrangement of stylized leaves, forming a rhythmic pattern that fills the upper portion of the tapestry. The trunk, rendered in twisting, flame-like strands of gold, rises from a diamond-shaped base. At the base of the tree, two bird-like figures are portrayed, possibly representing guardians or spirits associated with the tree of life concept. Picart Le Doux's signature style is evident in the highly stylized, almost abstract representation of natural forms. The geometric simplification of shapes and the rhythmic repetition of elements reflect modernist influences. Connoisseurs may admire that this tapestry showcases the superior weaving techniques typical of French ateliers of the period. The precise rendering of intricate details and the subtle gradations of color attest to the high level of skill involved in its creation.Condition: This vintage Jean Picart Le Doux tapestry further enjoys good condition for its age and origin.
