This antique Bijar tribal rug, dating back to approximately 1870, originates from the mountain villages of Western Persia's Kurdistan region. Known for their exceptional durability and intricate designs, Bijar rugs are renowned for their sturdy wool-on-wool construction, a characteristic that has made them highly prized over the centuries. The rug showcases a camel-colored background, contrasted by a green border and accented with beige as the main color. This specific palette reflects the traditional Kurdish artistic influences typically seen in Bijar designs, which often incorporate geometric and nature-inspired motifs. The dense and intricate pattern along the borders and central medallion is a hallmark of Bijar carpets. The central medallion is a significant focal point, featuring a diamond shape with symmetric extensions. It stands out with its dark blue color, adorned with intricate red and beige details, creating a striking contrast against the plain background. The border of the rug is robust and symmetrical, featuring elaborate floral patterns along with mythical creatures, primarily in shades of red and green. Inside the main border, a slightly narrower border contains a repetitive floral motif in red, blue, and beige. The overall design is highly symmetrical, especially in the medallion and corner pieces, which mirror each other both horizontally and vertically. Overall, the cultural significance of Bijar rugs is reflected in their unique craftsmanship, geometric designs, and robust construction. This antique rug embodies the rich heritage and artistic traditions of the Kurdish people, evident in every detailed motif and resilient weave.
