A wool kilim rug, hand-woven in Turkey in the 1930s. The all-over tribal design with ample geometric shapes is rendered in earthy shades of beige, ivory, rust, and navy.
This vintage Swedish double-sided flatweave rug by Orsa features an all-over design of large-scale stylized blooms in dark gray, against a field of accented light gray. Minimalist and modern, the vintage carpet stylishly uses floral abstraction and is part of the unique Scandinavian rug weaving tradition. In Sweden, vintage carpets and rugs in Scandinavian design have been hand-knotted in wool for centuries, taking on many different forms and functions over the course of time. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the craft was seen as being an important artistic and cultural practice throughout Sweden, and designers began to make antique oriental rugs that had a broad international appeal. Scandinavian rugs from the mid-twentieth century, endorsed by such fixtures of modernism as Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright, remain among the most desirable and sought after in the rug world.
A modern mid-20th century Scandinavian carpet, the camel and vibrant red field with an abstract design of solid bold blue, black and yellow overlapping enlarged triangles. “Vintage” is a ubiquitous term frequently applied in the world of rugs and carpets. Vintage rugs are quite often confused with antique rugs. The difference between the two is often ambiguous. Just what is vintage and what is antique? To clarify this quandary, vintage carpets and antique rugs are defined by the time they were designed and crafted; they’re generally made after 1920. On the other hand, antique carpets come from a time before then, so, generally, they were made more than 80 years ago. Age is a primary distinguishing factor, but even this is a fluid one. The dividing line changes as time goes by. For example, a vintage rug will someday be an antique. Vintage carpets and rugs are often linked to the origins of Modernism, so they can be more accurately placed in this category, given the association with the cultural, philosophical, and artistic elements of this movement.
Neutrals and gentle tones continue to increasingly find their way into our homes and offices. Brown is a color that immediately evokes a feeling of the earth and being in nature. When we are surrounded by the natural world, it brings a feeling of peace and calm. That is why browns are a favorite color when decorators want to bring this same feeling of tranquility to our interior spaces. This rug would make a beautiful addition to your office or home.
A Vintage Swedish Pile Weave Rug with a graphic and colorful design that seems to represent a landscape.
Beautifully rustic contemporary flatwoven room size geometric Swedish mid-century modern design kilim rug.
A Finnish flat-woven vintage rug has solid horizontal stripes overall in shades of yellow, beige, and brown with a brown rectangular containing geometric beige elements that recall traditional Scandinavian folk designs all with an outer solid brown stripe. Although the majority of people associate antique carpets with certain shagginess, flatweave rugs constitute a substantial part of the profound weaving heritage. Flat, Scandinavian area rugs have widely contributed to the development of rug-making techniques as they represent one of the basic forms of woven textiles. They are made without a pile and build upon the intertwining warp and weft. The simplicity and lightness of flatweaves mustn’t be taken as a sign of inferiority. On the contrary, the slightly simplified making techniques allow weavers to create ingenious pieces, often with an ethnic vibe, distinguished by appealing designs and incredible durability.
This Art Deco style rug features a bold all-over design of geometric and linear abstractions in cool dark brown against a field of light brown. This is a mid-century wool piece hand-made in the European part of Turkey and it’s clearly influenced by the Art Deco style that originated in Western Europe. Art Deco is a style of visual arts, architecture, and design that first appeared in France just before World War I. The Art Deco movement led to a fast evolution of the rug and textile design, among other art forms. Rug design evolved from traditional floral and highly ornamental to a style of angular elegance with geometric, abstract, and modern figurative motifs. The design is frequently spare, geometric, and architectural. The rugs created during this period remain elegant and refined to this day.
Adding a neutral rug to your space is an excellent way to give your space a fresh, new look this year. Minimalism embraces the concept that less is more when it comes to eliminating visual clutter, but this does not mean that the space cannot have character. The key to creating a minimalist space that does not feel empty is to use subtle differences by using pieces that add texture and depth. This gorgeous rug is versatile and creates an excellent way to satisfy your need for soft colors while still creating a cozy space.
