Antique Heriz Serapi rug, Country of origin: Persia. The brilliant red field bears a central Ray of Life and many highly abstracted geometric shapes in this fascinating antique Heriz Serapi Persian rug. Five flower blossoms cluster at different points along the mid-line, separated by riyu symbols in the shape of arrows. The patterns are gold color, rust, and green colors. A broad blue border presents scrolled geometric shapes, with jagged ruyi symbols connecting variably multi-colored medallions composed of diamond shapes with irregular outer edges. Three separate, narrow guard borders frame the border, each carrying a geometric pattern. Heriz is a community in Northwestern Iran famed for producing extremely long-lasting carpets and rugs, items that often pass down from one generation to another for many years. These antique rugs possess a coarse, durable consistency. The type of rugs made in Heriz is also sometimes produced in other places, including Bakhshaish and Gorevan. The highest grade of rug from the Heriz area is the Serapi, which was made around the turn of the Twentieth Century. Most Heriz rugs contain prominent knots but the Serapi is described as smoother.

A lion rests majestically on rustic terrain framed by a floral medallion at the center of this magnificent antique Ukrainian carpet. The medallion in this beautiful antique rug is set amidst an open field framed only at the upper and lower edges by thin garlands. While the design and coloration draw upon the grand repertoire of antique French Savonnerie carpets, the all-wool foundation and weave show that it was made in the Ukraine under the Czars as an imperial Russian counterpart to Savonnerie production. This antique Turkish Yuruk runner features an exciting, traditional design. Antique hallway runner rugs such as this fine piece are valued by collectors and admirers of antique Oriental rugs for their cultural authenticity, and their inherent uniqueness. In contrast to the more sophisticated, cosmopolitan city rugs, which are characterized by a rigid symmetry and a precise execution, tribal rugs such as this exemplary Yuruk are woven in a very traditional manner, utilizing local materials for the wool and the dye. Further, the designs of such pieces are much more subject to the weaver’s interpretation, and often feature figures that give the impression of a free treatment of form. The beautiful, repeating geometric figures that pepper the field and the border of this Turkish rug are exemplary of this tendency: for while a keenness of handiwork is readily apparent, the slightly asymmetric leanings of the figures is equally clear, suggesting an intentional aesthetic decision. This whimsical quality communicates cultural authenticity and tribal aesthetics in an exciting, delightful manner.
