Made with hand-knotted wool and velvet in France circa 1880-1890, this 5x14 gallery runner is a rare antique French Savonnerie rug among the most exciting new curations from Rug & Kilim’s European rug collection. On the Design: Admirers of the craft will note this late-19th-century piece is still a reimagining of the Regency style of the 1715-17123 period. Its design is an elegant series of floral patterns and curvaceous garlands that beautifully recapture the neoclassical and regency aesthetic. The border enjoys mascaron tile-like geometric patterns, enfolding a field of sweeping palmettes, cornucopias of fruit, and other finely woven botanical and pictorial elements. Though its polychromatic colorway is one of its many beauties, there are especially present gold, beige-brown and tangerine red hues, as well as blue accents among the many at play. The meticulous attention to fine details of the design, too, exemplifies works of this tradition—a purposeful and intentional piece of graceful air and presence. Admirers of the craft will further note what a rare find works in the gallery size are from this provenance—a collectible piece, equally suitable to wall-hanging projects as a tapestry in its size and sensibility as it is to flooring projects. Condition:This antique Savonnerie runner rug has undergone minor restoration and retrimming, and enjoys an overall good condition.
