A Beautiful Floral Design Antique Ivory Oversized American Hooked Rug, Country of Origin: United States, Circa 1920 — Rug hooking first appeared in the New England states of the USA in the mid-1800. During that time, colonial women would use scraps of old clothing, bed linens, and curtains to create hand-hooked rugs for their homes. At the beginning of the 20th century, this art once again became popular and remained so through the 1930. It was considered a part of the Arts and Crafts movement and often made its way into Craftsman-style homes. These antique rugs accented the fine woods used on the floors of homes in this architectural style.

The artist, Brita Molin‘s needlework is visible throughout this striking piece, drawing attention to the fabric itself in a way that is consistent with Swedish designs. An oceanic scene is cut in half horizontally down the middle and establishes two distinct backgrounds: the top a deep, grounding navy blue and the bottom a rich, inviting sea-green. The viewer eyes follow liquid paths of movement set in a fiery crimson flow down the tapestry, which create contrast and flow throughout the piece. A mandarin orange and sunshine yellow shape rests at the area rug center, bringing to mind visions of a vivacious sky over the sea.
A beautiful coffee background creates a grounding presence that defines the rest of the motifs throughout the area rug. Several flowery colors, in delectable instances of violet, aqua and blue, are set around the center of the hooked carpet as a system of layers that allows the viewer eye to move inward, drawing ever closer to the beige shape present at the very core of the piece. At the foreground of this shape are ten red flowers, arranged in two groups of five at the top and at the bottom to create a unifying sense of symmetry.
