This hand-woven rug originates from India, specifically from the state of Rajasthan, known for its rich textile traditions. The design prominently features large fish against a blue ocean-like background, catering to a transitional style that blends traditional and contemporary elements. The border is lined with shrimp motifs, adding to the nautical theme. Constructed from wool on a cotton foundation, this rug’s main color is a soothing shade of blue that mimics the appearance of water. The wool used is a blend of Ghazni wool from Afghanistan and South African wool, creating a dense texture. The rug boasts a high knot density, with approximately 104 knots per square inch, translating to a total of 1,653,266 individually hand-tied knots, highlighting the meticulous craftsmanship involved. Final touch-ups and washing are performed in Jaipur, where both antique and modern finishing techniques are utilized. Chromium dyes are employed for their color accuracy and lightfastness. The rugs are woven by smaller contractors in villages around Jaipur and as far west as Bikaner. Weavers often work from home, being paid by the square meter, with larger rugs necessitating horizontal stationary looms. The asymmetrical Persian-type knotting technique used contributes to the unique ribbed texture that characterizes this collection. A double wefted foundation—thicker at the bottom and finer at the top— also differentiates these rugs. The finer upper weft creates a speckled effect once the rugs are sheared, adding visual interest and a lighter appearance overall. Visually, this rug's aquatic theme is highlighted by various stylized fish motifs, each featuring intricate patterns and vibrant colors like white, red, yellow, and green. Seemingly scattered but balanced, these fish motifs are enhanced by additional marine elements such as seahorses and bubble patterns, all contributing to the underwater theme. The denim-like blue background provides a serene, watery backdrop, while the fish and marine motifs extend to the edges, creating a seamless look. The pattern is asymmetrical with no central focal point, contributing to a dynamic and flowing design.
Antique Chinese Deco Rug, Origin: China, Circa: Early 20th Century – Here is an exciting and appealing antique Oriental carpet – an antique Art Deco rug that was designed and woven in China during the early years of the twentieth century. Heavily informed by the aesthetic inclinations of the Art Deco period, this unique carpet is a compelling and thought-provoking example. A scalloped Purple encloses a Light Green sand field on this exquisitely subtle and restrained antique Chinese Art Deco. At first the field appears empty or open, but it is actually covered by a tone-on-tone design of scrolls and cloud-bands emanating inward from the outer edges. In their sinuous rhythms they echo the scalloped forms of the border and continue its visual effects across the carpet in a more subdued manner. This carpet testifies to the masterful design sensibilities of Chinese weavers as they made the transition into the modern world. The Art Deco movement had an outside influence on the world of art and design, and some of the most important qualities and characteristics of that movement may be found in this fine rug.

Made with hand-knotted wool and originating from China circa 1920-1930, this is a 10x13 rare collectible from the 1920s Chinoiserie style period pieces, and one of our new favorite curations. On the Design: A rich green underscores an almost open field design, with mirrored floral patterns in colorful tones relegated to the upper right and lower left corners. Keen eyes will further admire the celebrated floral motifs like those in Chinoiserie rugs as well as similar oriental provenances often considered to be of the Chinese Deco aesthetic. Admirers of the craft will appreciate this antique rug’s placement of florals—peonies and cherry blossoms in primarily coral and gold tones—which cascade from opposite corners. This asymmetrical arrangement reflects the profound influence of French Art Deco on Shanghai's workshops during the 1920s, when Chinese weavers began moving away from classical symmetrical compositions. What also marks this as a superior example of the 1920s is its sophisticated restraint—the intentional use of negative space allows each botanical element to emerge with clarity. It is in the most exceptional color and a great size suited to wider spaces—as versatile for interior design as it is collectible for admirers of this provenance.
