Here is a beautiful woven and comely antique rug, an antique Suzani embroidery, woven in Persia nearly four hundred years ago, during the seventeenth century. Profoundly beautiful and remarkably preserved for its age, this 17th century embroidery is both an alluring and culturally significant work of art. Grand ecru palmettes and delicate floral sprays create a classical arabesque that is divided by a series of diagonal strap work bands. The softly oxidized floral motifs are set over a robust blue background that highlights the intricately detailed arabesque. Regal borders embellished with large-scale vine scrolls and dainty guard bands contrast the ornate botanical motifs featured within the stately field. Verdant foliage, lush blossoms and dainty florets adorn the regal borders, which feature mitered intersections. This unusual antique Safavid textile combines the characteristics of a traditional arabesque with unusual strap work accents and mitered borders rendered in a timeless color palette that includes deep Prussian blue, ecru and subtle flesh-tone accents. Beautifully woven, this 17th century Persian textile is an exceptional example and an important work of art.
