A wool area rug dating back to circa the 1940s. A classic, symmetrical, highly ornamental Chinese Deco design with black and rust-colored curvilinear swirls flowing atop a peach background. This circa-1940 vintage Moroccan runner rug features an interesting all-over design of geometric abstractions that suggest to the eye stylized shapes of people and lighthouses while remaining utterly abstract. The design appears in dark brown against a field of neutral beige. Moroccan-style area rugs have typically been woven by tribal peoples for their utility rather than for decoration. These vintage carpets experienced a growth in popularity in the West when mid-century modern designers such as Le Corbusier paired the thick piled Berber antique rugs with their minimalist furniture. Many of these Berber carpets are woven by the Beni Ourain peoples from the Rif Mountains near the city of Taza in northern Morocco. Colors vary from neutral shades to bright, stand-out hues, with designs ranging from geometric simplicity to free-flowing abstraction. The primitivist feel of many Moroccan carpets makes them attractive to modernist collectors. Doris Leslie Blau Gallery offers Vintage Moroccan Runner aged circa 80 years. From versatile flatweaves to shaggy hand-knotted area rugs or runners, Moroccan rugs are both decorative and functional. Vintage Moroccan beige, blue, gray handmade wool runner, circa 1957, from Doris Leslie Blau's vintage rugs collection.
This vintage Moroccan rug was created circa 1950. Although made in the traditional way, it is distinguished by a very modern look. The whole field is covered with a shaggy purple-and-beige pile. The backing is pitch black, and so are the tassels which put the finishing touch on the composition. The rug was made by the hand of high-quality wool in accordance with centuries-old techniques. Careful making ensured its durability – the rug’s charm is alive and well as time has taken nearly no toll on it. Provided minimal care, it will serve its owners for generations without any signs of wear. India has a long weaving tradition and is especially famous for its beautiful textiles. You cannot find Indian area rugs as fabulous as those made in India and local antique rugs are especially sought after due to their original patterns. Agra rugs were loved by both Indian rajahs and English gentry and when you see this antique carpet you will understand why. Handwoven circa 1920 from the highest quality Indian cotton, this exquisite piece is bound to make your house look special. It sports an interesting pattern, which seems almost modern - proof that whoever wove this north Indian rug must have been thinking ahead of their time. The central field is composed of Moroccan clover with small stars in the center, bordered by a chain of delicate white flowers. The actual border of the pattern repeats the elements seen in the central field but does it with such a skill that they seem brand new. The color palette is a rather traditional mix of pure white and deep indigo, a dye beloved in India.
