Rug & Kilim
Hand-knotted in wool and originating from India, this 9x12 modern rug is a new addition to Rug & Kilim’s French Art Deco rug collection—a contemporary ode to the 1920s style moderne, with geometric patterns in the style of a Leleu or Da Bruhns aesthetic period piece. On the design: This modern Art Deco rug boasts an inviting texture, richness of hues, and ultimate play of floral drawings in this French Art Deco style rug. Teeming with a modern European sensibility and the high-low textures which lends it a rare dimensionality, this piece is an exemplary depiction of a balance of symmetry and whimsy that led the Art Deco movement to an iconic status in the world of textiles. Most compelling is the piece's balance of formal structure and organic movement—where traditional Deco symmetry finds new expression through contemporary weaving innovation. This collection represents Principal Jahanshah Nazmiyal’s goal to honor the many artists and weavers behind this movement, and contribute to the style in a bold new high-end rug for today’s interiors. Lavender Oriental Carpets
As the term implies, true Chinese Deco carpets were woven in a short time window, between 1923 and 1931, and in two places: the Chinese capital of Peking (Beijing) and the northeastern city of Tientsin (Tianjin). They were woven in large integrated factories as well as smaller workshops. These carpets were created by American firms for export to the United States. Nichols, Elbrook and Tavshanjian in Tientsin, and Fette in Peking were by far the most active. The Tientsin pieces, almost all in carpet sizes, show thick piles of glossy millspun wool, patterns ranging from Chinese-influenced with vases, leafy branches, seasonal flowers and butterflies, and dragons to wholly abstract, borderless creations with moss and bottle green, scarlet, fuchsia, beige, old gold and various shades of blue, all in unfading, crisp chrome dyes. Many are found still in top condition. The weaves are always moderate to medium, and very regular. There is no uniformity of pattern and most of the surviving carpets are unique. Colors: greens/pale wine/multi.
Made with hand-knotted wool and originating from China circa 1920-1930, this is a 10x13 rare collectible from the 1920s Chinoiserie style period pieces, and one of our new favorite curations. On the Design: A rich green underscores an almost open field design, with mirrored floral patterns in colorful tones relegated to the upper right and lower left corners. Keen eyes will further admire the celebrated floral motifs like those in Chinoiserie rugs as well as similar oriental provenances often considered to be of the Chinese Deco aesthetic. Admirers of the craft will appreciate this antique rug’s placement of florals—peonies and cherry blossoms in primarily coral and gold tones—which cascade from opposite corners. This asymmetrical arrangement reflects the profound influence of French Art Deco on Shanghai's workshops during the 1920s, when Chinese weavers began moving away from classical symmetrical compositions. What also marks this as a superior example of the 1920s is its sophisticated restraint—the intentional use of negative space allows each botanical element to emerge with clarity. It is in the most exceptional color and a great size suited to wider spaces—as versatile for interior design as it is collectible for admirers of this provenance.
The meticulous art of hand-embroidered textiles from Uzbekistan tribes inspired the Suzani Collection of rugs. Bold motifs, particularly pomegranates, the sun, and the moon, are frequent elements, our simple yet compelling designs made even more spectacular in wool and silk. Once traditional pieces of a dowry, these rugs will easily become part of families for years to come.

Chinese Deco Rug, Origin: China, Circa: Early 20th Century – Here is an exciting and appealing antique Oriental carpet – an antique Art Deco rug that was designed and woven in China during the early years of the twentieth century. Heavily informed by the aesthetic inclinations of the Art Deco period, this unique carpet is a compelling and thought-provoking example. A scalloped border of Blue encloses a Rose / Rust sand field on this exquisitely subtle and restrained antique Chinese Art Deco. At first the field appears empty or open, but it is actually covered by a tone-on-tone design of scrolls and cloud-bands emanating inward from the outer edges. In their sinuous rhythms they echo the scalloped forms of the border and continue its visual effects across the carpet in a more subdued manner. This carpet testifies to the masterful design sensibilities of Chinese weavers as they made the transition into the modern world. The Art Deco movement had an outside influence on the world of art and design, and some of the most important qualities and characteristics of that movement may be found in this fine rug.
Made with hand-knotted wool, this 12x15 antique Portuguese needlepoint rug is a rare new oversized curation in Rug & Kilim’s European rug collection—believed to originate in the early 20th century. On the Design: This piece features a particularly whimsical design, with floral patterns as commendable in their detail as they are playful in their choice of colors. Beige and cream hues underscore the piece, with floral patterns in such colorful tones—a particularly fabulous transitional piece, full of movement and playful touches the keen eye will appreciate. The border treatment reveals particular finesse, with its undulating sage-green frame providing perfect containment for the garden-like abundance within. Each floral element appears to have been captured at the height of bloom, creating a perpetual springtime that speaks to both Portuguese decorative traditions and timeless garden motifs. Here we witness the refined dialogue between formal European design principles and the naturalistic freedom of cottage garden aesthetics—a hallmark of superior Portuguese textile arts. It’s a fabulous work of European history, and an extremely collectible rug for its provenance, worthy of the most sophisticated projects today. Condition: This antique Portuguese rug further enjoys an overall good condition for its age and origin—an impressive find among needlepoint rugs of a celebrated weaving tradition. The piece has some minor blemishes that will be tailored before delivery.
