A rooster stands proudly atop a bearded blue face in this graceful mask. Fluid in its beauty, the sese wood carving comes from the Guro people of Côte d'Ivoire, where such masks represent the spirits of the underworld. This elegant piece by Salihu Ibrahim symbolizes protection.
Bordallo Pinheiro
This collection by Bordallo Pinheiro results from a collaboration between the earthenware factory of Caldas da Rainha, founded in 1884 by Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro, EGEAC (Lisbon’s cultural and animation municipal entity), and Lisbon’s city council. The original Bordallo Pinheiro’s Sardine, designed in the XIX century, due to its classic three-dimensional nature, became the ideal support for receiving the creative work that EGEAC develops since 2003, within Lisbon’s festivities, which transformed the sardine, iconic fish of Portuguese culture and gastronomy, an international icon of the city and of summer celebrations of the Portuguese capital.

Tall and slender, this imposing mask is covered with ornate aluminum. Embossed brass adds contrast to the superbly sculpted work of art, transforms seasoned wood into a cultural manifestation. These masks are worn in battle by warriors, who invoke the aid of the spirits. The god of iron then possesses them, giving them exceptional strength. They are able to fight to victory without losing their strength. But on occasions when they have gone into battle without this mask, they have lost completely."
Depicted in silhouette, colonial details evoke a traditional town in Guatemala. A church nestles in the shadow of tall volcanoes. Byron Toscano creates this handcrafted wrought iron work of art to display on the wall.

Carved by hand, this handsome mask depicts a soothsayer from the Bajokwe tribe of Congo, formerly Zaire. Sinclair Yao Daley gives it a smooth finish with rich brown color from natural cola nut dye. 'This mask is used to predict the people's future and foretell the outcome of situations in their lives,' the artisan explains.
Rita Addo Zakour demonstrates her creative skills with this delightful African mask. Covered by symmetrical motifs, the face represents a woman, and arises from the artisan's own imagination. She names the piece Obenewaa, a popular girl's name among Ghana's Akan people.
