Barong is a mythical guardian from Bali, usually depicted in traditional dances of the region. This wood mask brought by Nyoman Sedayatana features the guardian embellished with traditional motifs. Every detail is hand-painted, adding metallic tones that enhance the design.
Costa Rican artisan Gregorio García handcrafted this black decorative wall mask, inspired by the Taínos indigenous people. The mask is made from resin molded by a hand carved wooden mold and reinforced with fiberglass. The mask features an imposing headdress atop an intricately textured face.
With its demure gaze and beautiful ornamentation, this mask comes from northern Ghana. Such masks are representative of the Gonja and Mamprusi people. 'Most of their farmers and hunters send part of their first harvest to the chief's palace to be shared with the less fortunate in the community. In return, the chief presents this mask to each person as a sign of recognition and statesmanship,' says Evelyn Kafui Ahianyo. 'This piece encourages sharing and giving.' Her design is carved from African sese wood and displayed on an iron stand.
