In our cities, empty lots get filled almost as fast as they get emptied. Giant skyscrapers are erected in an instant. Gridded started as a glass and metal wall sculpture that explores positive and negative space. The sculpture, when displayed on a wall creates a dynamic effect, mimicking this exploration through light and shadow.

This incredible display includes 22 genuine Peruvian butterflies. The frame includes a keyhole hook at the top for mounting the display on a wall. The butterflies in these frames are raised on butterfly farms in Peru. These butterflies are not killed for display. After the butterflies have lived their lifespan, they are then collected and put into these frames. In doing this, the butterflies are able to fully mature and also reproduce on the butterfly farms free of natural predators. Through a deconstructive process, a photograph is broken down into individual aluminum composite tiles which are hand cut and placed over a welded metal frame on different elevations to create a 3D dynamic and harmonious composition. Each piece is hand created by the artist Karo Martirosyan in his studio in Los Angeles. With a background in architecture, the artist is influenced by the majestic power of nature, helping him build the structures, and using balance and color while imagining the story he wants to tell. The rear steel structure is primed and powder coated for maximum durability.
