Michael Aram
Judaica comes from Michael's fascination with objects of ritual. Regardless of the faith with which they are connected, they are imbued with profound energy and meaning that holds a very special place for Michael Aram. Whether it is a unique object or derived from a motif with a broad collection, each piece is created with a particular sense of reverence and care in both the function and the design. "This is such a fun object! It suggests its function through its form. A matzah, matzah plate...I do that a lot and it always strikes me with such a sense of whimsy and surprise. The surface texture of the matzah, when it is interpreted in cast metal, also creates an unexpected beauty. I love that it comes with a bag for hiding so it creates a ritual for kids and a special memory of family events."

The Butterfly Ginkgo collection celebrates the representation of flora as fauna. Michael's fascination with a particular type of ginkgo tree, the Ginkgo Biloba, or "Butterfly Ginkgo", which grows with a double leaf reminiscent of a butterfly's wings, gave rise to a fantasia image of the plant. Executed at the highest level of handcraftsmanship, each piece is rendered in solid brass with hand-etched cocoon-shaped vessels. The pieces in the collection are a tour de force of the handcrafted process, capturing the poetic spirit that is so deeply indicative of Michael's work.
The Olive Branch collection is one of the best-known and most loved of Michael's motifs. The simple forms create objects that serve wonderfully as stunning individual gifts or an exuberant table setting that decorates an entire moment of your life. The theme itself captures all the most distinctive aspects of Michael's work-narrative strength, deep symbolism, and extraordinary sculptural expression. "The olive branch has always held a powerful meaning for me representing both peace and victory. In designing functional objects with natural forms, there is a mingled sense of fragility and intensity. For me, it is like nature spreading through my interior spaces like a magical olive grove sweetly willing its way into my home."
The Orchid collection was inspired by the powerful sensuality of orchids and the rich ambiance of haute couture – strikingly simple yet full of the most extreme detail. The collection has an almost gothic feeling – opiated, lush, and smoldering – like the dark, velvety atmosphere of a luxurious evening.

The Michael Aram's Botanical Leaf collection takes its inspiration from the intricacies of form and texture found in particular types of foliage. Reminiscent of eucalyptus and seagrape, the structure celebrates the twisting branches as much as it does the leaves themselves. "The image of leaves and branches is eternal and has some kind of meaning for almost everyone. For me, the motif conjures a sense of freshness and fragility, while the materials and craftsmanship speak of something more robust, more human."

The Molten collection takes its inspiration from the lore of ancient craftsmanship and the application of these time-honored techniques to modern shapes and environments. It is about the transformation of "industrial" to "beautiful", "technical" to "lyrical". The collection also strives to represent the clean lines and minimal atmosphere associated with the ideals of contemporary life and progressive design. Intricately hand-welded edges make each piece an individual work of art, with no two pieces being identical. "The Molten collection represents a way of living, which I love - streamlined, timeless shapes ... objects which reverberate with the skill of their maker and yet do not fit into a traditional interpretation of craft. For me, the pieces possess a soulfulness and organic energy only possible through the handmade process. Each piece of Molten is made by a craftsman dropping individual welds along the edge of the object, not for the function of joinery but for the beauty and spontaneous quality that molten metal can create."
I felt disappointed, as it is not exactly like the photo, and not shiny.. Anonymous. . 2025-03-26 19:30:10
The Palm collection is inspired by the beauty of a windswept Palm tree and the perfectly imperfect shapes of woven Palm leaves and fallen fronds. The warm antique gold finish and the intricate sculpted textures exude comfortable luxury and graciousness. "I was having lunch with friends on a veranda overlooking the sea when I looked down to the lawn and saw a fallen Palm frond. The leaves were all twisted and curled, yet they stood out magnificently against the otherwise perfect landscape. It made me think of the passage of time, and the bountiful gifts of the Palm tree, which provides everything from food to shelter."
Beautiful as well but once again does not contain the Shema prayers.. Joyce. Fort Worth, TX. 2022-10-26 15:13:09
The Tree of Life collection takes its inspiration from the imagery that floats around classic storytelling. Whether the objects are seen individually or grouped together, they evoke a sense of charm and fantasy. Drawing profoundly from Michael's background as a sculptor, each piece emerges from hand-sculpted clay and offers a child-like quality with an inherent depth of meaning. There is such power in narrative images for me. There is a feeling that we're creating an entire imaginary world, building designs around interactive themes that are familiar to all of us. The shapes are obvious and immediate and, at the same time, the impressionistic and lyrical way a small child might imagine the scenes in a story he's being told. The image of the Tree of Life is one of my favorites. It is an idea that is so widely expressed in all cultures and by all religions that it becomes a universal symbol of hope.
The texture of Hammertone is an ancient surface treatment for metal that is achieved through the painstaking application of hammer marks, one by one, to shape the metal into various forms. The resulting surface texture is vibrant, faceted, and as contemporary as it is timeless. "While the immediate narrative in this motif is not as obvious as most of my work, it has just as much meaning. This texture speaks to me of everything I love about Indian hand craftsmanship... rich with the presence of the maker's hand, complex and beautiful, and highly symbolic of human endeavor."
