The undulant shape of the Sunbird floor lamp is achieved when the wood is rotated on a machine to carve its outline. This requires great skill because it has to be manipulated at 90-degree angles to create both the smoothness of the surface and the knottiness of the shape. Ian Thornton was playing around with profiles to see what interesting shapes he might achieve when he conceived this graceful design. The tan lamp sits atop a metal base in a brass finish and is topped with an off-white shantung shade.
The Dandelion floor lamp is a masterful composition that celebrates its namesake flower. The puff-balls that surround the bulbs are made of nails that are bent and welded together, a process that is extremely labor intensive. Made of wrought iron, the lamp's base stems, and leaves are in a contemporary gold leaf finish, while the floral elements are in a mix of contemporary silver leaf and contemporary silver finishes. This special piece expressively celebrates nature.
