The House of Scalamandre
Zen gray is a wallpaper with a pattern inspired by the Zen garden of Ryoanji, Japan. The sand of the Japanese stone garden is raked to imitate the waves of water around mountains and islands, symbolized by carefully placed stones. A slow process that creates a meditative calm.

This lively hand-block printed fabric, which was first created in 1922, features a stylized "Tree of Life" motif. The wallcovering pattern is digitally printed, on a grasscloth ground, with pigment-based dyes that fully emphasize the color variation typical of hand block printing. Directly interpreted from the fabric, it has been rescaled to make a coordinating grasscloth wallcovering.

Palampores, or "Tree of Life" patterns, have their origins in India, where the exotic designs were hand painted and mordant dyed, and exported to Europe and England for use as elaborate bed hangings and curtains. Pondicherry, now offered as a wallcovering, the colorways remain true to their 90's origins, highlighting the iconic filigree pattern amidst the exotic tree of life motif. The colorways were developed in 2015, with the filigree omitted from the fabric design. These wallcoverings and colorways remain true to the fabric's original design. Intricately detailed flowers and lush foliage accompanied by whimsical birds and playful squirrels add to its timeless appeal. The vertically branching print is perfect for a cozy breakfast nook, kitchen, or powder room.
