The Michael Aram White Orchid collection illuminates the ethereal spirit of the orchid flower. Evocative of purity, delicacy, femininity, and grace, the white metal version offers a strikingly different appeal than its black counterpart. While the sculpture is just as exuberant and detailed, in white, these flowers take on a unique simplicity. Every piece is truly a work of art. The Butterfly Ginkgo Furniture Collection celebrates the representation of flora as fauna. Michael's fascination with a particular type of ginkgo tree. Ginkgo biloba, or "Butterfly Ginkgo", which grows with a double leaf reminiscent of a butterfly's wings...gave rise to a fantasia image of the plant. Executed at the highest level of handcraftsmanship, each piece is rendered in solid brass. The pieces in the collection are a tour de force of Indian craft and capture the poetic spirit that is so deeply indicative of Michael's work. "The first time I saw this tree, it looked like it had been completely overtaken by butterflies...as if we would all take flight the moment I walked too close or made a noise. The idea that the leaves could evoke the beauty of butterflies was magical to me, like trees that can metamorphose from flora to fauna in the blink of an eye."

Whether the objects are seen individually or grouped together, they evoke a sense of charm and fantasy. Drawing profoundly from Michael's background as a sculptor, each piece emerges from hand-sculpted clay and offers a child-like quality with an inherent depth of meaning. There is such power in narrative images for me. There is a feeling that we're creating an entire imaginary world, building designs around interactive themes that are familiar to all of us. The shapes are obvious and immediate and, at the same time, impressionistic and lyrical - the way a small child might imagine the scenes in a story he's being told. The image of the Tree of Life is one of my favorites. It is an idea that is so widely expressed in all cultures and by all religions that it becomes a universal symbol of hope.

The Sunflower collection captures the radiant beauty and energy of its namesake. It's hard not to smile looking at Sunflower, with their ridiculously bright and happy faces. Turning towards the sun, as though to remind the rest of us to look towards the light and be forever optimistic. Last year I planted sunflowers in my garden, watching them evolve from seedlings to fully grown. Only when they blossomed did I remember why they are called girasol in French (sun turning). My neighbors got to enjoy the blooms while I got to understand that, from whatever perspective, sunflowers make me smile.
