This work and its variant in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris, represent the most ambitious paintings Degas devoted to the theme of dance. Some 24 women—ballerinas and their mothers—wait while a dancer executes an "attitude" for her examination. Jules Perrot, a famous ballet master, conducts the class. The imaginary scene is set in a rehearsal room in the old Paris Opera, which had recently burned to the ground. On the wall beside the mirror, a poster for Rossini's Guillaume Tell pays tribute to the singer Jean-Baptiste Faure, who commissioned the picture and lent it to the 1876 Impressionist exhibition.
Gallery-wrapped, matte finish.
Shadowed trees can be seen in this hazy landscape piece.

Theodore Alexander
Ruminate 1 recalls the mid-1950s work of American painter Cy Twombly. In keeping with Twombly's style, this impressive work features scribbles, drawn objects, and dabs of bright white paint. Taken together, these details convey a sense of fluidity and abstract movement that can be felt across the canvas. A muted color palette of light gray, platinum, and eggshell ties the piece together. A beautiful addition to art, Ruminate 1 uses subtle forms and tones to create an air of quiet reflection.
