This is a fine brush painting. It showcases sparrows, which often found taking shelter between roof tiles, hence aptly named Tile Sparrows. From the left extends a branch of crabapple. Its fruits hang sparsely from the twig, with leaves exhibiting the touches of autumn frost. These leaves are painted in a delightful blend of red, yellow, and green, vividly depicting the seasons transition. However, some of the leaves and fruits show signs of insect damage, hinting at the cycle of nature. On this crabapple branch, five sparrows perch. Four of them engage in various activities—some tucking in their necks in rest, others preening their feathers, each with a distinct posture and exuding a sense of calm. However, the central sparrow looks up alertly, spotting a tiny bee on the leaf above. It tilts its head, ready to peck, while the bee, sensing danger, raises its tail, preparing to defend itself. This scene beautifully captures a moment of stillness, yet teeming with underlying motion—a balance of tension and tranquility, perfectly embodying the principles of traditional Chinese painting. The detailing of the sparrows feathers is remarkably realistic. The crabapple leaves are rendered using light strokes and soft coloring to convey their delicate, moisture-deprived autumnal texture. The sparrows, fruits, and leaves are intricately connected by the branches, creating an organized, net-like composition. Upon closer inspection, even the slender inked branches, though fine, are shaded to distinguish light and shadow, imparting a three-dimensional look and showcasing their robustness.

Gert Johan Manschot lives in a modern barn aptly named the Dutch Barn in Dripping Springs, TX with six rescue dogs, two donkeys, a cat, and three beehives. Johan's career journey started in the Netherlands as a lawyer first and subsequently in project management. Throughout his life, he found joy in art: paintings, sculptures, and art collecting. After moving to Texas a little more than 10 years ago for love and marriage, he began drawing and painting himself. Initially, taking nude drawing lessons in Dallas, joined a painter studio there as well, and attended Texas Women’s University for a Masters in Painting. His art is heavily influenced by meditation having spent a significant amount of time in a Zen Buddhist monastery and at various retreats. His painting is predominantly abstract in form, mainly in black and white, using acrylic paint on canvas, wood, or paper, and most large in format. In the past year, he has been experimenting with color again, mixing color in with black and white. Johan expresses himself with one or a few large and fast brush strokes, a combination of motion and emotion. The strokes capture the energy that he experiences in the very moment of painting. They are invocative and challenge the viewer to question where the energy comes from and what it expresses. His paintings often have a Zen quality and expressiveness, minimal and direct. The Ensō, aka Zen circle, is becoming more and more of a central expression and integral part of his work. His figurative art, female figures in the nude, reflects and expresses the model’s energy, movement, curvature, lines, and elegance, using charcoal, graphite, or chalk on paper. As with his abstract paintings, the execution is fast with minimal lines capturing the essence of femininity.

I would have preferred to have an all white Matt finish around the perimeter and an off-white....there is a 1/4 inch matt border surrounding the primary edge of the print, followed by another 1/4 inch matt border in green, followed by another approximate 2 1/4 inch matt border in off-white. Although your website indicates only the large 2 1/4 inch matt border without any reference of the 2 smaller borders....It is the presence of the off-white that detracts from the overall look/success of the print. I feel the white border referenced in your website permits the overall print to stand out much more pronounced, as compared to the off-white which tends to mute the Japanese depiction of the village coastline. It's all in the details sadly. Gary. Winnabow, NC. 2024-08-07 15:06:59
