Artist Commentary: “In the Moonlight” is an Acrylic on canvas and is a close up of a horse’s face. I love the direct, gentle gaze of this horse and feel the light reflected in the eyes draws the viewer into this painting. Also, I enjoy it's simple, bold shape and the negative shapes around it. The horse is the color of burnt sienna, and there is a soft light outlining the shape of the head and back of the neck and mane. I used a vivid orange combined with soft white for these highlights. To contrast the warm colors of the horse and to help establish a mood I chose rich tones of turquoise blues and deep violets for the background and shadows. To tone these bright colors down, I blended in a neutral gray.
Artist Commentary: Portrait of a Bear" is the first of a series of my fascinating new subject, the bear. I have great admiration for the bear and consider them an excellent totem animal, so I find them to be great to paint. I first layered and glued squares and rectangles of handmade papers onto the entire canvas to begin this painting. You can still see this textured pattern under the layers of colors. I love the textures you can get from this technique. My palette for this piece is predominately blue/green, accented with iridescent gold. Finally, I added a bit of white on the snout of the bear for the focal point. I was inspired to capture the soulful and maybe even sad expression on the bear's face, which for me, evokes an emotional response and understanding of the bear.

Daniel Grant produces images that narrate the experiences he has encountered, shaped by his formative years traveling through the United States, Mexico, and Europe, where culture, art, and nature left a profound impact.
