Kosta Boda
Azur Stairs Petrol, by Bertil Vallien, is part of the Kosta Boda artist collection. This object in petroleum blue is cast in a graphite mold at Kosta Glassworks. The mold creates an impression of a face resting above a staircase.
Architects and children tend to be fascinated by stairs. Bertil shares that love! For over four decades, he has created and explored glass sculptures in which stairs are the lifeblood, the bearing element of the glass. A cube, a little house, a staircase – from these three simple shapes (and a few colors), Bertil Vallien generates an anecdote that sets something in motion, not only a desire to dash up and down stairs…Fortress Stairs is part of Bertil Vallien’s anniversary collection, “Bertil Vallien: 60 Years with Kosta Boda” (1963–2023), and is handmade at Kosta Glassworks in Sweden with details in real 21-karat gold.

Wearing a light blue nightshirt, dark blue pyjama trousers, slippers and a little hat, the Sandman stands happy and smiling with his two umbrellas. The Colors are tranquil and limited to cool shades of blue. Sandman has been turned in FSC certified beech. He has been made by hand with the great precision and care that are the hallmarks of Kay Bojesen's wooden figurines. The shape is based on the original Ole figurines from Kay Bojesen's archive – simple and minimalist, but full of life and soul – so that Ole is given a feeling of magic and adventure that reflects the spirit of Kay Bojesen and the storytelling he succeeded in creating in his imaginative figurines. Please note that the Sandman is not created with adjustable parts such as arms or legs. We therefore recommend mounting the umbrella with care and to mount both umbrellas to achieve the optimum balance.

It is Bertil Vallien’s latest form of the boat including a black and white glass spiral to which he often returns. Drifter has a glass base that makes it stand firmly without additional support.
