This stool is cut from a responsibly harvested chamcha tree trunk. Chamcha is an acacia species native to Thailand. We love the visible wood grains, even after we treat them to create this stone-like patina. The freeform line of the trunk remains intact, preserving the natural integrity of this piece. This is what modern organic looks like.

There was an aim to create a new typology of furniture by combining the functions of a flowerpot and an outdoor table, and thus was born, a collection characterized by its originality and versatile nature. By asking the question “how do we sit down?” three different versions arose that could be adapted into three different environments: one for a chill-out scene, low, completed with a very comfortable pouf out of the same collection; another to be used when seated in a chair or armchair, medium; and another for a standing position or when sitting on a stool, high, ideal for the pleasure of enjoying a cup of wine outdoors. The first sketches showed natural shapes, which as the project developed leaned towards more architectural shapes that call to mind a column with a capital or a corbel.

Love the concept. Fun, whimsical, cute. Entirely non-functional. All that is fine. Less fine: the quality is junk! The molding has flashing left on at the parting line and there are little chunks missing. Poor quality production of a cute concept. For the money, I was expecting better. The chair is inspired by the material, by the machinery, and, of course, by the skill and craftsmanship of the people, we worked with. Right from the beginning, I was looking for a distinct grammar for my design, a language that is very true to the material. I like the idea of wood cut into planks which is how it is processed in the first place: the tree is sliced into planks. I like the way a carpenter joins wood, very immediate and direct. The construction remains bare open, plain, and legible. Structure turns into form. Medici is conceived as a low chair with a comfortably reclined posture. Its generous dimension gives the chair embracing confidence. The chair can be imagined as solitary furniture or in small groups. It can be used in private or public, indoors and outdoors.
