The column is inspired by a set of six marble columns crafted in Granada, Spain, between 1350 - 1400 and now in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The columns originally belonged to the Alhambra, the famed royal palace city in Granada meaning â€œthe red one,â€ after the red clay of its construction. The narrow columns are characteristic of the Nasrid dynastyâ€™s (1232â€“1492) architectural style and would have ornamented outdoor courtyards between palaces.
