Brad Ellis is a Texas-based artist whose focus is on abstract painting. Throughout his career, he has continually experimented with imagery from tightly rendered, systematic patterns to loosely constructed, expressionistic compositions. He has distinguished himself by embracing the ancient medium of encaustic which is hot wax painting and is a process by which heated beeswax is mixed with pigments and applied to board or canvas and then fused to the surface with a heat source. Brad approaches each new painting with the same consistency that he's employed for many years now which he referred to as “Pattern, Rhythm, and Process.” He typically starts each painting by building up layers of paper and/or fabric collage materials by cutting and mounting these pieces onto the canvas or board and arranging them in a way to form the underlying pattern of the painting. This helps lay the foundation for the initial imagery and paves the way for the applications of the other mediums.

As the daughter of an artist, Julie was always exposed to and dabbling in different mediums. While she took countless art classes, she never landed on a particular medium that was called to her. Her need to be creative instead led her down a path that included an MFA in advertising design and a decade-long career as an art director. After stumbling upon alcohol inks at an art show and experimenting at home, Julie had finally found HER medium - the process itself spoke to her as none other had before. It is the actual process of working with alcohol inks that she enjoys. She pours combinations of ink and rubbing alcohol and directs the ink with a heat embossing tool that blows hot air, so there are no brushes or contact with the surface. It's like a little science experiment every time and is extremely rewarding. Julie's work tends to be vibrant, playful, and full of layered movement.

Donna Bernstein is a self-taught artist, painter, and sculpture. Donna drew and painted horses since she was a child. What differentiates her work is that, unlike most “equestrian” Artists, she did not grow up around horses. She did not live on a ranch. But instead, was spiritually connected to horses with an intuitive sense of them. Donna studied them voraciously; their anatomy, form, and attitudes. She had to create her horses in order to have them, her imagination played a great role, and so her stylized abstractive works reflect a non-realistic perspective, but with accurate anatomy.

Lesley was always a creative kid and both of her grandmothers were hobby oil painters, but it wasn't until she was in college that she really discovered her love for painting. Every painting begins outside. Not plain air, but with her experiences in the fresh air. It is these moments that capture her heart and her imagination and move her to put paint on canvas. Lesley describes her artwork as atmospheric, mysterious, peaceful, organic, tranquil. Though grounded in nature's capes, her work is more about the feeling of a place than the place itself. Memory and perception of the place play a large role in her work, as everything she paints is based on the way her mind recalls and how that comes out on the surface in the paint.

Sari Shryack is an artist who primarily focuses on acrylic paints and is inspired by the city she lives in, Austin, Texas. s a kid, she loved doodling and seeing what she could create from her imagination. In college, Sari found that she loved painting-- particularly painting with acrylics-- and she knew that she wanted to try to turn this work into a career. Sari really enjoys the work of Edward Hopper and some of the Bay Area impressionists. Viewing the work of these artists always inspires her to work harder and dive deeper into her purpose as an artist. Her everyday surroundings influence her the most. Going on long runs or walks in Austin helps her understand the city more and it really informs her work. The scenes she takes in during this process have helped hone in on the detail.

Kimmy Quillin is a New York-based artist whose life is a wandering road of creative experimentation. Color is of central importance to her work, found in bold geometries of solid color or swoops of bending backgrounds. Unexpected harmonies and borderline discords balance precipitously on their proportions and spatial relationships. Kimmy finds joy in letting her eyes travel over a painting, finding the special juxtapositions or interactions, that seem like a little smirk or a quiet joke. She finds the paintings to be playful and tender in character, but also deliberate to give pause.

Melanie Biehle is a Seattle-based artist whose abstract paintings are fueled by exploring the world. She draws inspiration from the often opposing energy of the city and the sea. Melanie zooms in on the shapes and patterns of architecture or coastal rocks, and then taking a step back, reveals an expansive view of endless ocean waves or gleaming architectural skylines. Both views are essential in creating her abstractions in mood and in content.

Jess has been painting with watercolors and oils on large canvases, small scraps of paper, and everything in between for as long as she can remember. She went to Savannah College of Art and Design, never thinking that one day she would “actually” become an artist. That took a bit longer to realize. But here she is, living the dream. Jess's mission is simple: to make beautiful work that makes people feel extraordinary. Her aesthetic is influenced by her African upbringing - using simple lines, rich colors, and organic shapes to capture life in every form. She believes the process is just as important as the outcome, when she's in a flow and she enjoys the process the work feels fresh, effortless, and alive. After she conceives a new idea she tries to spend some quality time with it - to let it sink in. Then usually the work comes out very quickly. If it doesn’t, she never forces it, she just goes outside for a bit, clears her head, and comes back later. It’s amazing what fresh air can do for perspective.

Shawn Thomas is a photographer from Austin, Texas. His education and professional background are in social work, education, and statistics, and I continue to be interested in utilizing social science research to better understand how all people can master themselves and their environments to realize their potential and their dreams. "In my work, I generally don’t go looking for the most amazing waterfalls or vistas or architectural wonders, though I am happy to photograph those amazing subjects whenever I have the chance. Instead, I more typically go out to explore everyday scenes or objects in which wonders exist but often go unnoticed. I would like my work to turn people on to the many amazing things that surround them every day, and the brilliance within that too often goes unnoticed. Like a yellowed leaf that’s fallen on the hood of a deep blue car, or two bright green vines that meet and wrap around each other in an empty space."

Linda O'Neill lives in Boulder, CO, and loves...dogs, hiking in the mountains, pistachio ice cream, indie movies, anything Italian, art museums/galleries, a good glass of chardonnay, and cool autumn days. Before Linda moved to Colorado 20 years ago, she worked as a Digital Painter for Lucasfilm on motion pictures and commercials. Linda considers herself an Abstract Expressionist so she works very intuitively and expressively to bring transparency to raw emotion. painting with acrylics on both canvas and paper, she incorporates collage, paint pen, oil pencil, Caran d'ache, and ink. Working layer upon layer, always listening to music, she rotates the canvas as she goes until she is happy with the composition. She makes a point to let go of critical thinking during this process, preferring to let her subconscious run the paintbrush.

Gert Johan Manschot lives in a modern barn aptly named the Dutch Barn in Dripping Springs, TX with six rescue dogs, two donkeys, a cat, and three beehives. Johan's career journey started in the Netherlands as a lawyer first and subsequently in project management. Throughout his life, he found joy in art: paintings, sculptures, and art collecting. After moving to Texas a little more than 10 years ago for love and marriage, he began drawing and painting himself. Initially, taking nude drawing lessons in Dallas, joining a painter studio there as well, and attending Texas Women’s University for a Masters in Painting. His art is heavily influenced by meditation having spent a significant amount of time in a Zen Buddhist monastery and at various retreats. His painting is predominantly abstract in form, mainly in black and white, using acrylic paint on canvas, wood, or paper, and most large in format. In the past year, he has been experimenting with color again, mixing color in black and white. Johan expresses himself with one or a few large and fast brush strokes, a combination of motion and emotion. The strokes capture the energy that he experiences in the very moment of painting. They are invocative and challenge the viewer to question where the energy comes from and what it expresses. His paintings often have a Zen quality and expressiveness, minimal and direct. The Ensō, aka Zen circle, is becoming more and more of a central expression and integral part of his work. His figurative art, female figures in the nude, reflects and expresses the model’s energy, movement, curvature, lines, and elegance, using charcoal, graphite, or chalk on paper. As with his abstract paintings, the execution is fast with minimal lines capturing the essence of femininity.

I had high hopes for this as I loved the composition and wanted some color in the hallway. Unfortunately, the print could have been better. This was partly my fault as the original piece is a collage with a combination of encaustic and cut up newspapers which in person would have great depth and luminosity. The print however flattens everything out and loses that quality, which I should have known it would. In addition, the piece has been reduced from it's original size, which is evident when looking at the newspaper clippings. All in all this work will be fine if located where it can be viewed from a distance, but is disappointing when when approached closely.. Eric. Los Angeles, CA. Sat Aug 10 2024

Kim is an Austin-based artist specializing in abstract paintings. She was raised in Houston, TX where she realized her passion for art at a young age. After years of focused practice, she studied at Texas Christian University where she fostered her love and skill in painting. In Kim's adult life, art has opened doors to professional apprenticeships in Austin, Houston, New York, and London; and opened up a worldwide travel opportunity including extended stays in India, Zambia, Western Europe, and Southeast Asia. Kim's practice is inspired through her training and travel as well as by abstract expressionists whose lives and careers explored questions of space, identity, and subconscious through abstractions, repetition, and process. Namely Helen Frankenthaler, and Agnes Martin.
