Guro masks of the ivory coast are globally renowned for their hand-carved beauty and design... The masks are thought to give their wearers spirit powers, depicting an intricate fusion of human and animal features to create unique and decorative sculptural wares. The group has traded their techniques with neighboring tribes for years, thus, many Guro masks share traits with their neighbors, the Baule, and you people.

This type of large wooden shield has been historically used as a defensive weapon in wartime and displayed as a decorative symbol of status and wealth by the tribe in Cameroon. Hand-carved from one solid piece of baobab wood, a sacred wood used for medicinal and ritual purposes for centuries, this large shield boasts hundreds of hand-placed black glass beads on manila string in a circular pattern around a dimensional cluster of natural cowrie shells in the center. The edge is framed in a row of cowrie shells, as well, creating a bold silhouette. This decorative shield is one-of-a-kind, collaboratively crafted by a large group of tribespeople to make each piece truly unique and communal.

The Chokwe people's history dates to the 15th century, founding several kingdoms across the land, but ultimately settling in Angola. They are vigorous and courageous hunters and agriculturists, reflecting this dynamic spirit in their vivid. These wooden masks are the most powerful and important to the Chokwe, known as Chikunga. Highly charged with power and considered sacred, Chikunga masks are used during investiture ceremonies of a chief and sacrifices to the ancestors. These elaborate masks are made of barkcloth stretched over an armature of wickerwork, covered over with brown and black resin, and painted with white designs. Long, thick rope juts out to form hair, bringing these masks to life. Only the current chief of a group wears Chikunga, enhancing the godlike caliber of this mask.

This mask is hand-carved from sacred soft glossy-colored into an elephant head adorned with coins, decorative hand-painted embellishments, a metallic gold tusk, and snout, and bolstered on a stand for prominent display.

Masks are the most coveted art form for the Dan tribe of the Ivory Coast, representing the most powerful embodiment of spiritual forces, called glue. Like did, glue inhabits the dark forest, longing to enter and participate in the ordered world of the village but, being invisible, cannot until a mask is interpreted from a dream, described to the elders, then made. The carver sculpts the wooden mask with baobab wood and adorns it with chicken feathers, cowrie shells, and cloth. The mask is worn by the carver with attire that includes forest materials such as raffia, feathers, and fur, all representing the glue. Socially, these masks are the means of bringing control and order to village life, providing the strongest impressions of a young Dan person's earliest and most important experiences.

This brown wooden Senufo statue is used during Lo Society initiations and rituals, also known as a poro society--an educational rite of passage group for men. A Senufo diviner uses the statue to represent an ancestor during a tribal custom, philosophical, or historical teaching. This one-of-a-kind female statue is hand-carved from sacred Baobab wood with hallmark details to the Senufo form, including an angular jaw, exaggerated hairstyle, scarification patterns on her breasts. These details emanate the beautiful female form in a proportionate pose specific to how the professional master carvers would create them.
