A mask of handsome artistry, it was once believed to confer power and strength to the warriors of the Bete tribe, from Cote d'Ivoire. Salihu Ibrahim crafts an extraordinary replica featuring two horns, symbols of power, and the tip of a sword.

This mask is used by females of the Bwa tribe during the harvesting of grains, says master wood carver Salihu Ibrahim. Target-like circles on the wings identify this ethereal creature as a butterfly. Gliding on soft wings, the mask represents a nature spirit among the Bwa tribe of Burkina Faso.

This artisan faithfully replicates the fertility mask of the Baule people of Cote d'Ivoire. He carves the sese wood mask by hand with female features including a comb in her hair and inverted triangles on the cheeks. The mask is worn during special festivities for a good harvest.

With a chameleon on its forehead and a smaller mask on the crown, this mask represents the customs and traditions of the Asafo people. They have adopted the chameleon as their symbol, for the Asafo tend to constantly move and change, including their garments and colors.
