This highly expressive mask with a fierce visage is adorned with snakes around the face and is worn by the Akipinis people for the Danyibakaka Festival. The event celebrates the historic crossing of the Danyi River with the aid of serpents. Once they crossed they settled there, forming the Danyi district near the town of Kpando. Sinclair Yao Daley hand-carves a loyal sese wood replica of this celebratory mask.
He is as he is! This very expressive mask is worn by the Akipinis people during Festival!! He’s fierce, bold and will scare off any evil spirit! Adorned by carved snakes with circle eyes trimmed in white. It’s detailed carve work makes his open mouth red trimmed eyes really stand out. His mouth is a little different and his red tongue is more prominent! He’s a good conversation piece will keep little hands off of him! He’s a keeper. My photo was taken outside for better comparison. Enjoy it. Marchella. Sherman Oaks, CA. Tue Mar 08 2022
