Sefah Mohammed carved this intriguing mask above an antique-style comb. Originating from the Ashanti region of Ghana, such combs were used by people long ago. The face of a person is featured, highlighted with embossed aluminum with rich textures. The artisan names this design Afi, which means "comb" in the Twi language.

By Abdul Aziz Mohamadu, this handsome mask takes the shape of a bird. "The Wangara people of Mali use this mask during the Moo – Wangara, which celebrates a bumper harvest," he explains. "The festival is to hoot at the hunger that they once experienced. The people are very joyous on this occasion because they recount the bad times when they had to go hungry. Looking at their present state of plenty, there is a lot to be happy about."

A majestic zebra mask hangs from the wall, crafted of sese wood and embossed aluminum with a beautiful russet finish. Ghanaian artisan Victoria Agyepomaa designs this mask, finding inspiration in the richness of African wildlife.

Carved by hand of sese wood, this mask honors the beliefs and customs of Liberia's Dan community. Salihu Ibrahim decorates the expressive mask with jute braids and beard. "I think this mask is among the most unique pieces I've crafted," says the master carver. Believed to depict the spirit of darkness, the mask is credited with bringing success in hunting and in business.
